My summer vacation in ‘polite,’ ‘friendly,’ ‘inexpensive’ Maine
NY Post ^ | August 21, 2022 | Cindy Adams

Welcome to Vacationland Wondering where this column was last week? Sorry. I forgot to say I’m taking two days off. My computer’s exhausted. I went to Maine. Why? I’m a world traveler. Done Cambodia, Indonesia, most of South America, Fiji, Kabul, Kathmandu, Beirut, Siberia, India, Outback, Galapagos, Iran, Iraq, Laos, the whole Caribbean, all Europe, Fiji, Samoa, New Guinea, China, Japan, Taipei, Alaska, Hawaii, Himalayas, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Guam, etc — but Maine? Not. I’ve also not seen Oklahoma — but who cares? Longtime friends whose ancestors founded the state of Maine in the 1800s and are in its museums and histories invited me. It’s north. Eight hours as the crow and a BMW flies. Borders Canada, so it’s cool. Clean. Airy. Fresh. Ocean. Shoreline. Beaches. Open sky. Green. Trees. Lighthouses. Boats. Harbors. Coastlines. No litter. No trash. It’s polite. Friendly. Inexpensive. Seafood. Lobsters the size of Radio City. Locals whose behinds overlap the state of Texas all stuffed into shorts. Realtors could establish an entire campsite on the average ass.

Just what I thought a humorous article.

We used to actually joke and laugh here occasionally.

I’m vacationing in Virginia this week. I’m at the Revolutionary War museum at Yorktown as I type this.

Realtors could establish an entire campsite on the average ass.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

And they would have to go all the way to Aroostook County to find a piece of that ass.

Presque Isle North is a very intersting area of lakes, intersection of French, English, and Indiginous culture, and magnificent harvest time dining. And the Amish are all interwined in the mix of it.

“No litter. No trash. It’s polite. Friendly.”

SO ... who, by inference does NOT therefore vacation there???

Lobster roll and a pint of Alexander Keith ale. Can’t get much better than that.

Polite huh?

She must not have run across any REAL Mainers....I hear some of them aren’t exactly welcoming. Lol!

We went to Maine for a family vacation in 1982 at a cottage type place my Dad and his family went to back in the 1950s, lol. Saw Boothbay Harbor and the nearby area. The area where the cottages were was apparently just as infested with mosquitos as it had been when my Dad was there as a kid, also lol.

semi-funny. She is preoccupied with the size of Mainer’s butts. WTF is that?

The Amish.
Not a big vacation spot for the AMISH. They prefer Hampton Beach, NH.

By AMISH, I am not referring to those people still living in the 18th century in Lancaster, PA.

What Old Orchard Beach in ME is famous for are Canadian men in French bikinis. Also known as a banana hammock.

“I hear some of them aren’t exactly welcoming.”

Bunch of NY types when I went there years ago, along with overpriced lobster. Never went again.

Mosquitos are known as the state bird in ME.
This is also why every house has a screened in porch. If not, you cannot sit outside in the evening without bathing in DEET first.

Who has that kind of money or vacation time? Must be nice.

I’m 71 and have been to 21 countries total, but only 4 on vacation and only two international vacation trips.

I had been in all 50 states by the time I was 32.

Maine is beautiful in August. Especially, from Camden up to Bar Harbor. It is a great place for sailing/boating. However, you need to be prepared for drastic changes in the weather.

I went to Booth Bay for 4th of July back in the late 1980s.
We had to buy sweatshirts because it was all fogged in with a high temp in the 50s.

Sailing in and out of Camden harbor and the islands off shore of there is one of prettiest places in the world I have ever been. It is only like that for two months a year though. Late July to mid September. When the ocean warms up above 65 degrees.

Imo, she probably was mocking Oklahoma because she regards the mid section of the nation to be populated by unenlightened rubes. I’ve trucked all over Oklahoma, and find it quite diverse geographically. No mountains or ocean views, but most everything else. On average, OKC and Tulsa surely have friendlier people than any city on the east or west coasts.

I loved our two vacations in Maine. Last time spent ten days on the Kennebec River and Bath then four days at Boothbay Harbor.
