Astronomy Picture of the Day - Earth's Recent Climate Spiral
APOD.NASA.gov ^ | 22 Aug, 2022 | Video Credit: NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio

Explanation: Is our Earth warming? Compared to the past 250 million years, the Earth is currently enduring a relative cold spell, possibly about four degrees Celsius below average. Over the past 120 years, though, data indicate that the average global temperature of the Earth has increased by nearly one degree Celsius. The featured visualization video depicts Earth's recent global warming in graphic terms. The depicted temperatures are taken from the Goddard Institute for Space Studies' Surface Temperature Analysis. Already noticeable by many, Earth's recent warming trend is causing sea levels to rise, precipitation patterns to change, and pole ice to melt. Few now disagree that recent global warming is occurring, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has concluded that we humans have created a warming surge that is likely to continue. A continuation could impact many local agricultures and even the global economy. Although there seems to be no simple solutions, geoengineering projects that might help include artificial cloud creation to reduce the amount of sunlight heating the Earth's surface.

There has been no warming for 15 years according to IPCC. Although it remains to be seen if the final report will be modified to placate the control-freaks that run the world.

Yep, they had to add the warming in the last 120 years text, though they know very well it is because we are coming out of “The Little Ice Age”.

The last 11 thousand years have been nearly ideal compared to what came before.

Yep, what will solar panels do under a mile of ice when the next ice age hits? I want to hear one of these climate change genus’ explain that.

That’s for sure. Since a lot of oil fields are in the Arctic I’ve wondered how challenging it would be to drill there when the ice caps return to glacial maximums. Maintaining the modern societies we’ve enjoyed could be a real strain.

A note about that graph, the Little Ice Age is incorrectly identified. The LIA occurred within the red circle. The little bump down before our “current warming.” Now imagine what it was like at 15 yrs ago and before. Serious pain for agriculture.

That would be 15k years ago. 15 yrs ago wasn’t too bad. :)

"projects that might help include artificial cloud creation to reduce the amount of sunlight heating the Earth's surface."

Good idea. Let's intentionally f*** with Earth's climate. What could go wrong?

Solar panels and windmill turbines will form a sedimentary layer that will befubble future scientists (”What the heck were those cretins thinking?”).

Befuddle.

Although “befubble” doesn’t sound bad. Too much covfefe...

Just another agency that will need to be gutted, reformed, and de-ratted.

Well said, if the idiots in charge plunge us into another ice age, it will last 100,000+ years. Science websites like phys.org publish great articles about astronomy, cosmology, quantum mechanics and high energy physics. When they publish an article about climate science, all of a sudden, their brains fall out.

Welcome to the Holocene, er, Anthropocene Epoch, baloney.

If the IPCC is involved it is like having WHO/CDC making pronouncements on science or medicine — totally corrupt. Might as well ask the ATF or CDC about gun deaths.

Fossils of temperate plant species have been found above the Arctic Circle, and well preserved (estimated) million-year-old frozen plant parts under a mile of ice in Greenland.
