Maine Capitol Police screener Craig Donahue was returning from his lunch break when he heard a "loud thud" and the sound of metal rolling.

The cylinder was about 7 inches by 5 inches with grease all over it...

Two other people saw the object fall around 12:30 p.m. near the capitol building in Augusta, according to a Maine Department of Public Safety news release. No injuries were reported.

The Maine Department of Public Safety said in a news release that the FAA is "attempting to locate the source of the part which is likely from a large airliner on an international route."

In a statement to CNN on Tuesday morning, an FAA spokesperson said, "The FAA is aware of the report and is investigating."

I have about 150 (at least) large planes go directly over my house each day about 1800’ above me as I am in the flight path of one of Sky Harbors two main runways. High enough not to be noisy but I am waiting for the day when a chunk hits my house or car or maybe me.

About 4 years ago an emergency slide fell off a big jet about 3/4 of a mile from me and landed in a front yard. Would have easily killed anyone it hit.

...and find it BEFORE it starts its final approach.

I don’t think that’s an engine part. Looks more like a wheel hub which might cause some landing difficulties.

Idiots can’t even write a headline much less an article. “Journalism” school teaches Marxism first. Writing last.

You are absolutely right.

We’re so used to shoddy, incompetent “journalists” and lack of editing now.

I think you’re right. Has more the look of tooling than aircraft part, just to my eye. Don’t they stamp numbers on tools so they can track them down when someone forgets one inside a plane?

That's part of a main slat's vertical flappinator.

Hope it didn't tear out the battery valve seals when it separated.

It looks like a fairly important part.

Looks like a sizeable bushing. I doubt it fell OFF a civilian aircraft which continued flying and landed without incident. Perhaps OUT OF.

“Looks like some kind of bearing assembly.”

Yes it does, like from a landing gear?

I’m guessing that hunk will affect the landing rather than flight. That loos like a wheel bearing.

The plane from Maine has nearly caused a claim.
