Video shows bear take on bird feeder in Alabama — and people can’t get enough of it

Video shows a bear taking on an Alabama bird feeder — and people can’t get enough of the wild match up. The curious bear was spotted on its hind legs, not quite able to reach the feeding containers that dangled from the top of a pole on Thursday, Aug. 11, according to a social media post. “My neighbor built a new birdfeeder that is a lot higher than the last one,” Facebook user Heather Fath Messick wrote. “The bear is trying to bring it down.”

The footage she shared online shows the bear grabbing and shaking the bird feeder’s tall pole before turning its face toward the person behind the camera. Despite the bear’s best efforts, the feeder remained standing at the end of the 25-second video clip, which ended with the animal sitting on the lawn in defeat.

People should NOT be feeding birds anyway.

“People should NOT be feeding birds anyway.”

Why not? We feed every third-world animal.

I am not a bird lover (I favor cats), but some people like watching birds taking a pity stop for a meal and a shower before moving on. What's wrong with that?

My in-laws enjoy watching the birds come and eat of their bird feeder. It’s so enjoyable.

Right now I am sitting at my kitchen window with a cup of coffee watching a beautiful hummingbird at the feeder outside the window. A few seconds ago there was a Gila Woodpecker having a grape jelly breakfast a few more feet away.

Wildlife experts encourage feeders if they are kept clean and measures are taken to discourage rodents. Responsible people who feed birds take these measures.

Many people, myself included, get a lot of pleasure by attracting birds to their yards and watching them. If that’s not you, don’t do it. But please don’t tell other people to stop doing innocent activities that give them simple pleasures.

OK, where do you want it.

feed the birds all you want

but welfare is not helping them birds.

Maybe you can also build some Low Cost Bird housing projects for the birds that get too fat to fly and too lazy to go hunt for bugs and seeds

I have some nice succulent mature Alfalfa in my back yard that is an attractive nuisance for the local domesticated dependent deer around here, it also houses some fat toads. The cat from next door is friends with a 3 point buck, I have seen the cat actully rub up against the bucks legs like they do with people. The same cat would also like to find those toads to play with, so I leave some clumps of Alfalfa for the toads to hide in,

so yeah, I am also guilty of wild animal welfare myself.

Birds are pollinators and an important part of the food chain. If you are one of those folks who say “Oh, I never eat anything but meat and potatoes anyway!” stop and think for a moment what you’re going to feed all those cattle with and what food producers will be able to rely on if the birds and insects - esp bees - go away.

It’s generally all right to feed birds, if you want to do it - but like it says in the article, if there’s any sign a bear has been around, take the feeders down. Otherwise feeding wild birds keeps us in tomatoes, potatoes, corn, beans, and so on. (And flowers! Who doesn’t like flowers?)

That poor bear will end up having to pay the price if it gets too used to bird feeders, however; those folks should take the feeders down so the bear will go away. There was a recent story I read about a lady seeing a bear in the bird feeder in her yard - she went to the outside door and yelled at it - the bear was feeling territorial and attacked - it broke the sliding door and entered the house and attacked the lady - the lady and her husband finally fought the bear off.

Raccoons also hang around bird feeders and they aren’t so adorable, either. (And your local ecosystem can probably do without so many raccoons.)

I like to feed birds but I don’t use a feeder except for hummingbird feeders. Since I am home all the time, I just put small amounts of food out in one place or another, never in just one place all the time. There have been signs of a bear hanging around - but there is always something around whether one puts out food or not. I’m pretty sure he moved on. Lately there has been a large bird like a hawk or eagle hanging around making lots of noise - I never saw him but only his shadow.

But, yeah: Feed the birds even if all you want on your plate is meat and potatoes! Their habitats are being destroyed and poisoned. They can use the help and you’re doing a good deed.

Put the bird feeder 6 inches off the ground and it becomes a cat feeder

I have a nice big Honeysuckle bush that the hummingbirds visit.

I also do not use pesticides or weed killers and that really helps.

If you like feeding birds, thats fine, but like smoking or pesticides it is something you should not do but go ahead.
