‘I won’t continue to do this if this is the new normal:’ EVP Coffee recovering after second burglary in months (Madistan, WI)

MADISON, Wis. — It’s sadly not new for a business on Madison’s east side, but EVP Coffee’s owner calls the latest burglary a one-two punch — showing a side of her neighborhood she never expected to see.

“There was glass everywhere, the cash register was thrown on the floor,” owner Tracy Danner said.

Danner’s general manager encountered quite the mess Wednesday morning at EVP Coffee.

“The door was open, the ATM was stolen,” Danner said.

As shocking as it looks, it wasn’t the first time this has happened. It’s Danner’s second break-in at the East Washington Avenue location in 10 weeks and among 15 she’s experienced in her 25 years in business.

“This one really felt hurtful, it felt bad and it felt different,” she said, “it felt more violating than ever before.”

Now, Danner said she doesn’t know if she can keep up with this level of crime in her Madison neighborhood.

“I won’t continue to do this if this is the new normal,” she said.

The crime is new but thankfully not normal yet to the owners of the new Aftershock Arcade nearby.

“Obviously someone getting burglarized just down the street is a concern,” co-owner Brad Van said.

On the east side for less than a year, Van said they haven’t had anything like that happen, but it’s on his mind.

“At close, we have had some of our bartenders share concerns with us that they don’t want to be working the shift by themselves so we don’t staff people alone,” he said.

Still, business owners here like Danner love their neighborhood.

“I promised myself I would never put bars on my windows,” she said. “You know, I don’t want to be afraid of my community. I don’t want to send that message. I love my community.”

Customers, nearby businesses, and neighbors showed they love her too, offering support on social media and in-person since she re-opened Thursday.

“I realize that it’s meaningful what we’re doing and it matters and it matters to people so that makes it worth it for me as well,” she said.

While she’s been offered help, Danner said they are able to cover the repairs.

“I just feel so much gratitude to this community for the support and love and they’re acknowledging who we are to them,” she said.

Damages are unknown because she is responsible for the missing ATM, and she doesn’t know how much money is inside.

Still, she said the community support assured her that this won’t be a defining moment.

“I’m staying with love and I’m staying with kindness you know and I believe we all deserve it. So, I’m going to keep showing up that way,” she said.

Yes, this is UW-Madison area. The Berkley of the Midwest. Madison has been the home of the self-admiring, ivory tower liberals. You know, the liberals who are certain they are better and smarter than any Conservative, because they understand things and see things in their enlightened way. So, in a sense, this is interesting to see their enlightened city become unglued.

A lot of people migrated to Madison from Chicago and Milwaukee in the 90s and 2000s to escape the violent chaos that surrounded them there. And guess what? They brought or replicated the very same chaos with them to Madison.

The area of this business is actually a nice area. However, there is a lot of low-income housing in the surrounding the area and this is where the problems are coming from. And in Madison, as in other liberal areas of the country, the business owner here seems to be moderating her comments. Do you have any idea what would happen to her and her business if she really spoke her mind over the damage she has suffered? The media would swoop down on her and the liberal backlash would probably drive completely out of business as she has several locations.

Madistan, WI.

Another poster just explained about all the "istans" in the U.S. LOL! (Actually, it's terribly sad but unless the majority of American voters wake up ......)

Democrats/RINOs always assume the majority of American voters are mindless lemmings and depend on that as their voting base. But are they right?

You nailed it. But Madistan has a LONG history of tolerating the intolerable. And as much as it pains me to say it, Paul Soglin WAS a good Mayor. 3 times, I believe? he was a regular customer of mine at my Garden Center (outside of Madison!) He loved his home-grown tomatoes, LOL!

Those of us that are sane - MOVE AWAY!

It was great when I was a kid in the 70’s. Yeah, we had the Hippies protesting Vietnam and all, but they pretty much left the rest of us alone.

It wasn’t unusual for Mom to drop us off at The Mall (one of the first!) and for us to catch a bus up to The Capitol Square where we’d run wild for the day until she picked us up again. No fear...for us or her.

Yeah, we had the Sterling Hall Bombing. 1970. We had JUST moved to Sun Prairie (bedroom community) and Dad took me and Sis down there to see the damage. We were 10 and 6 years old at the time. It was a fantastic Object Lesson. Dad was a die-hard Conservative, LOVED President Reagan, and listened to Rush from Day One. ;)

My liberal sister lives in Madison; she hears plenty of gunfire in her East Side neighborhood; right where this story happened. I’m sure she ran over there to hug the owner, while they both count on, ‘Rainbows and Pixie Dust and Brandon’ to keep them safe.

Yep. And nary a PEEP from Madistan’s Chamber of Commerce - or the lefty lesbian Mayor! Many of those buildings are STILL boarded up.

But, they don’t show that on the local news. It’s probably racist or gay-bashing or something. *SMIRK*

You are 100% correct in your WAG.

The two areas of Wisconsin that are infected the worst with flea-bitten Hippies and card-carrying Communists are always referred to as, ‘The People’s Republik of Madistan’ and ‘The People’s Republic of Milwaukeestan.’

Of course I know that. It's just like when I merely mention the Democrat Party Cabal-directed nationwide violent Black Lives Matter/Antifa wild thug mob riots throughout the 2020 Election year (perpetrated to make President Trump look bad). If I merely mention that, the Democrats/RINOs' knee-jerk response is "that's racist." No it's not racist to say that the Democrats/RINOs coordinated with the violent Black Lives Matter/Antifa wild thug mob rioters to perpetrate nationwide violent BLM/Antifa thug mob riots throughout the 2020 Election year. Those are just the obvious facts. I know it, RINO Dick Cheney knows it, and so do all Democrats & RINOs.

Not everyone.

Some people stick around for family.

Some are too poor to move.

Some are tied to job and finances.

Then the children there are obviously not leaving without parents.

Ding! Ding! Ding! on your wild guess. When I graduated there in ‘79, it was already called Berkeley East (but so outclassed all others at partying that Playboy would no longer include them in their rankings).
