“The gun used in the fatal shooting on the Rust movie set could not have been fired without pulling the trigger, ” far-left ABC News reported, summarizing an FBI forensic report.
This is in direct conflict with actor Alec Baldwin’s claim he did not pull the trigger on the gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins last year during a camera rehearsal.
“No, no, no, no, I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them, never,” Baldwin told George Stephanopolous in December. “The trigger wasn’t pulled. I didn’t pull the trigger,” he added.
The FBI says otherwise:
"Accidental discharge testing determined that the firearm used in the shooting — a .45 Colt (.45 Long Colt) caliber F.lli Pietta single-action revolver — could not have fired without the trigger being pulled, the FBI report shows.
With the hammer in the quarter- and half-cock positions, the gun “could not be made to fire without a pull of the trigger,” the report stated.
With the hammer fully cocked, the gun “could not be made to fire without a pull of the trigger while the working internal components were intact and functional,” the report stated."
As of this writing, Baldwin has yet to comment on the report.

if you don’t bring it back FAR enough to cock it, and let it go, it goes off...
IIRC. I could be wrong: It was the armorer’s first real job. A twenty-something who’s father was a movie armorer but this was their first gig alone. Alec was responsible for that hire. Rules and safety were loose. The prop was a real weapon and had been used for recreation the previous day. (Ammunition was therefore on the set or the prop removed from the set. Control over the prop was compromised.) The armorer brought the weapon for a rehearsal at Alec’s request to block framing for a scene. The Cinematographer was behind the camera and the Director behind her. Alec takes the weapon from the tray and starts pointing it at the camera. (Never point a firearm at someone unless you intend to use it. Even a prop.) At some point he pulls the trigger. He never checked the weapon. The Armorer didn’t check it before passing it to him. The bullet passed through the Cinematographer (killing her) to wound the Director.
The rest is mystery because it seems to me he is being given every benefit of the doubt due to who he is and not what he did.
Not having a Colt SA to experiment with, if the hammer is being cocked, and released just before it reaches the last notch, what happens?
Does the half-cock position stop it?
If the intermediate notches were broken, the 10-month study would have found and mentioned that, right?
Just wondering.
Yes, a jerk on the trigger made it go off.
As the owner of two single action revolvers I must say that the trigger pull weight requires relatively low pressure to release the hammer. It is one of the features of that design that make them a pleasure to shoot. Under 4 pounds on many models and on some single actions even less. So, an actor who is “dramatically caressing” the trigger of a cocked single action could easily release the hammer. That does not excuse the actor from direct responsibility for the negligent discharge or excuse him from liability for the incident.
