“Timber rattlers have the fastest strike of any snake anywhere. If you avoid an actual strike you got lucky.”
You’re close. The fastest strike belongs to the cotton mouth. But either of them strike with a speed you can’t dodge if within range. Very sick either way and possible death based upon the health of the bitten and time to get to medical assistance.

I’m over 50 and originally from Georgia, not far from the Okefenokee. We saw him at least once in person when my sons were young.
I videotaped his programs on public TV; my older son would watch them for hours on end.
You can still find those programs on the Utube.
The last time we were at the park was about 4 or 5 years ago. I was amazed to see signs all over warning people about the alligators (they’re dangerous in case you didn’t know!) When I was growing up we took several field trips there. They didn’t have signs all over and we were probably warned about the gators once. Nobody ever got eaten, amazingly enough.
I guess we lived dangerously back then, we even took a field trip to a nuclear power plant!
“This has got to be outlawed. big pharma made ZERO $$$ on this.”
And the WEF says “Das ist verboten!”
“>>Familiarity breeds contempt. ”You get so used to working around poisonous snakes you forget they can still kill you.<<”
It’s a common issue for anyone regularly working with hazardous materials. If you do it long enough you tend to become complacent and sloppy. Then bad things happen. Like the workers at the Wuhan Institute.
“You get so used to working around poisonous snakes you forget they can still kill you.”
I came across my first working rattler on a remote riverbank in TN. Their rattle doesn’t sound like what you hear on TV. It’s more of a loud buzzing and it was under a rock I was sitting on.
My theory is evil people hate him. Trump derangement syndrome’s real..
No……Bill Haast was at the Miami Serpentarium
I’m talking about the Serpentarium in St.Cloud, Florida
St.Cloud is just a few miles from Orlando
Apparently the researcher WAS the prey!
“A respected snake researcher who had been making significant discoveries...”
One of the significant discoveries being that they don’t always try to avoid humans!😎
Larry Elder starring in a commercial on Fox News where he goes running through the woods and jumps over a log, paying no attention to what might be under the log on the blind side; I keep imagining that there is a rattler there that turns around and bites him in the ankle.
Another Rattlesnake enthusiast:
Marion Rose of Alta Lake, Pateros - circa 1953
Since 1937 he operated a resort at Alta Lake until his death from a rattlesnake bite to his ear at age of 83 in 1971. He was an interesting person to talk to.
He kept his snakes in a washtub under his bed, and would display them for visitors.

I saw that episode. It was scary as hell. The snake was a black mamba, and he just managed to avoid being bitten.
Elder is a great American. If he heard a rattle - like me - he would run like the wind. lol
I came upon a rattler in the Wyoming/SD area crossing the dirt road. He was quite large, so I determined to drive over him, and harvest the parts I wanted. The rattle and skin, and this was going to be easy. I ran him over well and good, but when I went back to finish him off, he struck at me and came within a foot or so of my bare leg. I got back in the jeep and went back and forth a few times, and he was thoroughly bird bait.
To do what this man did for decades, he has balls of iron.
That'll teach him to respect snakes.
It’s more of a loud buzzing and it was under a rock I was sitting on.
How long did you stay sitting on the rock?
Swamp wise
“How long did you stay sitting on the rock?”
It was a pretty big rock (like 8 feet) and I was there for quite a while. Got off the rock to do some fishing with the friends I was with and when we got back I jumped onto the rock and the buzzing instantly started again. That’s when it dawned on us that there could be a snake under it (and there was).
I guess the scientist was the prey then.
Don’t know if that works in Africa but I can assure IT DOES NOT IN AMERICA.

Neither do moth balls but I can’t convince my sister of that, she has then all around the foundation of her house.
