Coyotes are here to stay in North American cities – here’s how to appreciate them from a distance

People often fear for their own safety, or for their children or pets, when they learn about coyotes in their neighborhoods. But as an interdisciplinary team studying how people and coyotes interact in urban areas, we know that peaceful coexistence is possible – and that these creatures actually bring some benefits to cities.

Our team is working to learn how people feel about coyotes in their urban communities so that we can identify the best ways to foster positive human-coyote relationships. In Madison, we’ve found that many people appreciate coyotes and are likely to respond positively to messages that highlight coyotes as a valued part of the urban landscape.

Based on existing research, we believe urban landscapes have plenty of room for coyotes and humans to coexist peacefully. It starts with each species giving the other enough room to go about its business.

I apologize, but it seems we couldn’t keep the Republic.

Sorry Ben, too many democrats and illegal aliens.

If you hate pets and young children, you should welcome coyotes in your subdivision.

There isn't a night I don't hear them on a kill. They trot by my cameras a lot.

Simulation! Wife said one looked in a window when she was at her desk, this morning. That never happened before.

I've got a vid of a hare followed by two bunnies running as fast as they ever have. A few secs later a coyote ambles by, lol.

Cripes! I was on my porch (as always) last week when a bob cat walked around the corner.. three feet away. Eyes met. He kept walking, no doubt beta-ed my fierce countenance.

New reptiles this year. A horse whip snake (pink!) A King snake and a couple cool new lizards.. The zebra tailed is neat!

Here’s a fact of life: rabbits and squirrels are fast and agile prey.
Your toddler is much easier to catch.

And a six foot fence doesn't keep them out, unless it has coyote rollers on the top. The traditional six foot fence just gives parents a false sense of security. Municipal zoning ordinances need to be amended.

I could coexist with them - at times I actually do (I live out past the 'burbs, mostly). But then, I have no livestock or pets.

My neighbor with the chickens would disagree with my attitude, as would my DIL's mother, who watched one snatch her dog while they were jogging.

Do if coyotes are apex predators, what keeps their population in check? For a while it can be territorial expansion. They could feed on each other. Animal control?

I don’t do much hunting anymore (getting too old to drag a deer carcass through the woods), but in Illinois there is no restriction on taking coyotes (depending on local ordinances). I’ve shot a few out in the woods and left the remains for the other coyotes to enjoy.

They are a nuisance in my neighborhood, as are foxes. All too often I’ve come across the remains of some cat, or little dog, or rabbit, or skunk, or possum, that have been chewed to bits and eviscerated. Too bad my town does not allow shooting them, unless it is to stop an attack on a person. Then, be prepared to answer some questions.

I live in a rural subdivision outside Omaha. I was sitting in my driveway a couple of weeks ago having a beer and a coyote came sauntering down the street in front of my house about 11pm. Looked over at me and just kept trotting along.

There is a large farm field about 2 blocks from my house that is the edge of the subdivision. They get to howling and it drives my dog nuts. My buddy who’s house backs up to the field sits on his deck with his night vision glasses and infrared scope and shoots coyotes that are harassing the deer.

Living (sort of) in the country is kinda awesome.

I’ve seen few coyotes here in NE Utah but have seen many in So. Lake Tahoe. They wander the neighborhoods and mostly eat rodents, family cats, and small expensive dogs.

And then they also have the bears and cubs... who like to swim in your backyard pool...

They run up and down the road in front of my folk’s house; they live up on a logging road. They compete with the bears and cougars and other animals there.
