So what is the definition of "Yacht Rock"?

What band or artist would be the poster child for "Yacht Rock"

I'll go ahead and start. First off, I really have no idea what the definition of Yacht Rock actually is, hence my asking the question. All I can say is I always had a vague idea that it was any song that reminded me of being out on a boat at sunset. As for the poster child, I'll suggest the Climax Blues Band song "I Love You". Although that's a song and not a band, so I'm not really answering my own question.

Not sure if there is an official definition of Yacht Rock but it's basically soft rock music, primarily created during the late 1970s and early 1980s, that combines elements of jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock. It's synthesizer heavy, melodic and smooth. Basically studio-crafted perfection.

Steely Dan is the poster child of Yacht Rock. Those guys would slave in the studio for years, bringing in various musicians, to get every track absolutely perfect. I'm not sure that Donald Fagen or Walter Becker ever saw sunlight. I picture them perpetually hunched behind a massive sound board, sliding dials up and down until they got things just perfect.

Yacht rock seems like an oxymoron to me since I don't associate yachts with real rock music. This seems more like smooth jazz with some added, light genres mixed in. Nice enough music, but not rock.

To paraphrase Potter Stewart, I can't define Yacht Rock but I know it when I hear it. If you could start your playlist with Bertie Higgins', "Key Largo," you're already in the neighborhood.
