I don’t think you’ll get many responses to this thread. (/s)
Rem 870 or Mossburg 500. Simple design. Easy clean. Lots of ammo. If you have even shot a firearm at night, the you can appreciate a shot gun. 4 buck for self defense. Slugs for anything short of a garbage truck.
Not saying I’m right or wrong, just my opinion:
Shotgun doesn’t spread as much as you think it would ay house distances, so you still have to aim.
5.56/2.23 doesn’t penetrate like you think it would through walls.
.45/9mm penetrates a lot more than you think it would through house walls.
All that said, I think it depends. Maybe you live in an apartment, maybe you live in a brick house, maybe neighbors close by is not even an issue.
I used to use an AR, but got concerned about what would happen to my hearing inside a house and switched to AR9 pistol. But what I have isn’t reliable enough so back to AR for now.
anyway, just my .02 for what it’s worth. Good luck!
You need both of course but first for homeland defense I would get a youth 20 ga pump shotgun…handy, light, shootable, very effective at inside the house ranges…also you should have an AR and 9mm pistol to complete a basic defensive firearms array…
Home defense - shotgun.
SHTF - AR15.
Semi auto shotgun, 7 plus 1 in chamber. Great for home defense and takes the worry out of reloading 😂
AR-15 Only IF you're willing to get training and practice with it. (even at a 25 yd range)
Also, Get a Red Dot sight and at least 1000 rounds of ammo.
If you can't or won't do ALL of that, get a pump action 12 gauge shotgun.
Mossberg 500, 20 gauge is nice, 12 is more versatile.
If you’ look and are fortunate, you can find those shortie rounds from Federal or Aquila.
No need to spend a lot on something you hopefully won’t need to use.
Home: Radikal NK-1
SHTF: Radikal NK-1 backed with Beretta PX4
Remington 870, inexpensive and reliable. Goes off every time until empty.
Have you considered a 357 Magnum? This is the most versatile and reliable handgun. A 357 takes 9mm, 38, 38 special, 357 special and 357 magnum.
This is not only good for home defense but also when SHTF.
Absent more specifics and state-permitting of the weapon and pistol grip, I got mine for under $400 a number of years ago
https://www.mossberg.com/590-7-shot-50778.html
Added pistol & slide grips, light, shoulder sling and keep a bandolier with the weapon which I throw over the other shoulder in a pinch.
Works well without further modification in a close quarters such as house, load up preference of shells (I keep several in my bandolier).
The Taurus Judge revolver shoots 45 Colt or 410 shotgun shells. https://www.taurususa.com/revolvers/taurus-judge
For home defense, the shorter the barrel the better. A long barreled shotgun or carbine in close spaces puts the homeowner at a disadvantage.
My nightstand weapon is a 300Blackout pistol. It’s an AR platform with a slightly larger bullet than a .223/.556, I want to blow out both lungs and the heart too if I need to confront a perp in my home.
You also might look into buying a suppressor for your home defender, lighting off a gun inside your home or car is going to make you temporarily deaf, and that could be very dangerous during and right after. Just sayin’
Check out the Maverick shotguns by Mossberg. It’s their value line version of the 500.
Mossberg Maverick 88 12 gauge pump action shotgun. $300 or less.

AR10… not AR15.
This will get me flamed but so what. Skip the shotgun for your primary/first and maybe only gun ( from the facts given). Not saying it isn’t a good gun but it holds a very small amount of rounds and is not quick and easy to reload. A single bad guy is just one scenario. Far better to be prepared for multiple bad guys and not run short mid confrontation. A quality AR 15 or AR 9 would be my best recommendation.
Just sayin'.
