With limited funds for firearms purchase, what are thoughts about home defense shotgun v. SHTF AR or other style rifle? Which would be your priority?

For home defense, the shorter the barrel the better. A long barreled shotgun or carbine in close spaces puts the homeowner at a disadvantage.

My nightstand weapon is a 300Blackout pistol. It’s an AR platform with a slightly larger bullet than a .223/.556, I want to blow out both lungs and the heart too if I need to confront a perp in my home.

You also might look into buying a suppressor for your home defender, lighting off a gun inside your home or car is going to make you temporarily deaf, and that could be very dangerous during and right after. Just sayin’

Check out the Maverick shotguns by Mossberg. It’s their value line version of the 500.

This will get me flamed but so what. Skip the shotgun for your primary/first and maybe only gun ( from the facts given). Not saying it isn’t a good gun but it holds a very small amount of rounds and is not quick and easy to reload. A single bad guy is just one scenario. Far better to be prepared for multiple bad guys and not run short mid confrontation. A quality AR 15 or AR 9 would be my best recommendation.

From what I have read it’s the velocity that does it in through drywall, so the mass blows through but it disintegrates and then loses all it’s energy. I would like to test that sometime.

Of course type of ammo changes everything.

I just found out the green tip holds together a little too well and really is not good against personnel. And of course that’s 90% what I have so that sucks.

In a suburban or urban environment a 12 gauge pump is very cost effective. A combination of Number 4 buckshot & slugs is my recommended ammo. #4 buckshot is deadly but won’t over penetrate like 00 may due. Brenneke slugs are effective against cars.
Get one with a 20” barrel. Later,if you can afford it, get a 26” or 28” extra barrel and practice at the local range with inexpensive target ammo. Practice and learning safety is absolutely important. If you know someone that is a shotgunner talk to them, most are very helpful people. The gun is only as good as the operator.

“blow out both lungs and the heart too i”

XD XD... nice.

I thought about blackout but I am terrified to have it in the house because I have 5.56 as well.

Can you imagine picking up the wrong mag in the dark?

If you have a .357 magnum revolver, you might want to consider getting a compatible carbine, such as the Henry Big Boy. It holds ten rounds in the tube and one in the chamber for .357 magnum, or 11 in the tube and 1 in the chamber for .38 SPL and .38 SPL +P.
