Ticket bought in Illinois wins $1.337B Mega Millions jackpot

A single ticket bought in a Chicago suburb beat the odds and won a $1.337B Mega Millions jackpot.

According to megamillions.com, there was one jackpot-winning ticket in the draw Friday night, and it was bought at a Speedway gas station and convenience store in Des Plaines.

“We are thrilled to have witnessed one of the biggest jackpot wins in Mega Millions history,” Ohio Lottery Director Pat McDonald, the current Lead Director for the Mega Millions Consortium, said in a statement on the lottery’s website. “We’re eager to find out who won and look forward to congratulating the winner soon!”

The jackpot was the nation’s third-largest lottery prize. It grew so large because no one had matched the game’s six selected numbers since April 15. That’s 29 consecutive draws without a jackpot winner.

Lottery officials had estimated the winning take at $1.28 billion, but revised the number up to $1.337 billion on Saturday.

The total prize is for winners who choose the annuity option, paid annually over 29 years. Most winners opt for the cash option, which for Friday night’s drawing was an estimated $780.5 million.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 302.5 million.

According to the Illinois Lottery, the store that sold the ticket is a pretty big winner, too; it will receive half a million dollars just for selling the ticket. A clerk at the Speedway store who answered the phone but declined to give his name said the store had not been officially notified that it sold the winning ticket and that he learned about it from reporters calling for comment.

Illinois is among the states where winners of more than $250,000 can choose to not reveal their names and Illinois Lottery spokeswoman Emilia Mazur said the vast majority of those winners do just that.

Re: 14 - You are correct. A person local to where I used to live won 4-5 million. We talked about two years after she had won. Had long lost friends show up, family wanting to borrow for a can’t miss investment, etc. She seemed genuinely sad describing how her family had been damaged by several family members and friends being greedy.

Last I heard she had moved to another part of the state and was doing well.

I would immediately build wal marts in places like Martha Vinyard and Chappaquiddick along with free bus lines to them from the inner cities

Yes, his was quite a story and sad.

As your source noted, he was already a successful contractor. Seems he would have been better equipped than most to handle wealth and it’s dangers.

IMO 1.33b is enough to not have to worry about getting screwed on taxes.

ROFL! I'm a "starve the beast" guy, and I don't want to give the State or Federal Government one thin dime more than I have to.

Yours is the type of thinking this corrupt to the core government depends on to keep on screwing us all over.

Do you really think the lotto is ran fairly and honest ? Do you really think winning would make your life better ? If you believe either I feel sympathy for you .
Luke 12:15

And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.

Sure, but it would be nice to, just once, walk into the gun store, point to the grail gun and say “I’ll take that, and 2 cases of ammo” and not worry if you’ll be able to make the car and house payment. I have never been that financially blessed.

A woman who was a grade school through high school classmate of my brother won 20 plus million back in early 2000. She was in her 40s at the time, single and caring for a sibling who was mentally slow. Five years later her sibling died of neglect from an infection and she dies from a drug overdose in a local motel

You could call that a curse.

You’d need a good ramp to get enough speed to get a bus to Martha’s Vineyard.

When you calculate the effects of inflation, those dollars paid in the out years are going to be more like nickels. Far better to take it up front and immediately invest in income-producing assets, the value of which will grow with inflation.

The Mega-Millions annuity payout increases 5% each year, with the 1st year being a little over $20 million, and the 30th year payment being almost $83 million, all based on the $1.337 Billion payout, and before taxes.

My neighbor won the lottery over 20 years ago. He won 3 million dollars. But because he chose the lump sum option, he netted about 960 thousand and change. He was pissed because he thought lump sum option meant they’d pay him the 3 million in full.

Still, he put the money he got to good use. He installed an inground swimming pool in his backyard, he updated, renovated, and slightly expanded his house. New rooms, new extra bathroom, expanded kitchen, finished basement, new roof and siding, etc. And most of all, he started his own plumbing business which seems to be doing very well.

I don’t know how much out of the initial 960 thousand he spent to do all that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he has long since earned it all back and then some.

I matched zero digits on MM, but on my PowerPlay Powerball ticket, I made $12 for hitting the bonus ball number (and no other digits). Both were ez picks.
