The thing about this that’s jarring is that the participants expect that the harm they sustain will be socialized, while their participation will be simple “freedom to choose”, any restrictions a violation of a “right to privacy”.

I didn’t know they made a movie.
It was a book by Randy Shilts, written about SF and NY. I knew a lot of the people in the book personally. Very well written.
Probably the best insider account of AIDS politics 1979-1988 that will ever be written.
If you wonder why expensive AIDS medication is free and expensive diabetes medication isn’t, read the book.

More the book. The film shied away from some subjects (as I recall). A big part of the spread was the reluctance of authorities to shut down events where it spread.
