A 23-year-old man who “exited” a plane Friday afternoon before it made an emergency landing at Raleigh-Durham International Airport was found dead around 7 p.m. in Fuquay-Varina, authorities said.
...Crooks was the plane’s co-pilot
That was the tragic ending to a confusing emergency at RDU Friday. Around 3 p.m., a twin-engine turbo prop aircraft reported landing gear issues as it approached the airport, according to the airport. The plane landed on Runway 5R-23L and veered into the grass, according to the airport. The pilot, the only passenger on the plane when it reached the ground, was taken to a Duke University hospital with minor injuries, an airport spokesperson said.

“I guess he was fired and did not have a golden parachute...”
Please don’t post stupid jokes to me.
The camera went dark, so I don’t know.
I used to live in fuquay-varina for a couple years back in the 1990s. Nice place. Good people. Was there when Fran tore through. Neighbors helped neighbors.

Abbott: You throw the ball to first base.
Costello: Then who gets it?
Abbott: Naturally.
Costello: Naturally.
Abbott: Now you’ve got it.
Costello: I throw the ball to Naturally.
Abbott: You don’t! You throw it to Who!
Costello: Naturally.
Abbott: Well, that’s it—say it that way.
Costello: That’s what I said.
Abbott: You did not.
Costello: I said I throw the ball to Naturally.
Abbott: You don’t! You throw it to Who!
Costello: Naturally.

It sounds a lot creepier than it is. Plus with solo as I recall you have to do several static line jumps at low altitude before you get to freefall.
With tandem, I got an 8000 foot freefall
Given the photo of the plane, that isn’t what happened.
It’s not the creepy factor (though there’s that, too) so much as who’s in charge of my life. What if the guy’s having a really bad day and decides he’s just not going to pull that ripcord? At least with the solo method you can check the equipment and operate it yourself.
April 1988:
“LOUISBURG, N.C. — A veteran sky-diver who fell 10,500 feet to his death apparently forgot to wear a parachute in his excitement to film other sky-divers, police said Monday after seeing footage taken by the man during his final free fall.”
The guys we had have done thousands of tandem jumps. That was the least of my concerns.
I don't know if there is a law but I do not think a beginner is allowed to jump solo.
I am glad I started jumping when the only requirement was you had to jump with a Static Line for your first ten jumps before you could free fall.
Was that a different incident? I know the one I remember was during Desert Storm, so 1991.

There may have been more than one, skydiving is a dangerous sport. I remembered the 1988 instance because I was overseas myself at the time.
At the parachute center where I made my few jumps, the routine was two static line, two or three hop & pops, then gradually increasing free fall times. I was up to 10 seconds when I moved away from the area, and just never got back to it.
I have no idea what the legal situation is today, but I’d bet that most places won’t face the possible liability issues. Just one serious accident or suicide would ruin them.
Everything’s fine until it isn’t.
