Alabama prison officials examined female reporters’ clothing and tried to block a female reporter with AL.com from witnessing Thursday night’s execution of a death-row inmate, saying her skirt and shoes violated a prison dress code.

Ivana Hrynkiw, a reporter and managing producer with AL.com, said she was told by Alabama Department of Corrections Public Information Officer Kelly Betts after she arrived at the media center at William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore that her skirt was too short.

AL.com sent a formal complaint to ADOC, Gov. Kay Ivey and Attorney General Steve Marshall on Friday.

I suspect that "MeMaw" would side with the Corrections Officer.

I am of the era where hems had to be at least below the knee or home you go. I lived mainly in Southern States as an adult, including Alabama, but am a Yankee by birth. The heat was very hard for me to tolerat, so thank God for AC. I would have never dressed for work the way this young woman dressed no matter how hot, even if there were no dress codes. Common Sense, professionalism? This is what we Boomers get for raising kids to believe they could do anything they want and break whatever traditions they didn’t like. What I found out is when you do that, and you’ve really got nothing better to offer, all you get is CHAOS.

Need evidence to judge guilt or innocence (Diplomatic immunity will be considered in rare cases).

Those are rules for visitation. Not for executions.

Good points.

And I’m not even saying she has to be super dressed up and in a suit or label dress, I’m saying it should be better than normal casual, if you’re on tge clock and claim to be a “professional”. Make an effort to actually LOOK professional. She looked like she had just come from the 7-11 and bought a slurpee.

Not a common name, especially in Alabama. Used to be a well-known neurosurgeon in Birmingham with that name - wonder if she is his daughter?

“Those are rules for visitation. Not for executions.”

She was visiting the prison. After the incident, Hrynkiw and others asked for the dress code and Betts provided an online link to a prison visitation dress code. The dress code is mainly directed at women and states that “all dresses, skirts, and pants shall extend below the knee (females only). Splits/Slits must be knee length or lower (females only).” As for shoes, the only reference is made in the items prohibited include “slippers, shower shoes, and beach shoes.”

Hrynkiw and other reporters who have been covering executions over the past decade have not had any prison official cite any dress codes for reporters. The prison spokeswoman admitted that reporters may not have known about the policy, and it had not been enforced before. She said the new warden of Holman, Terry Raybon, wished to enforce the policy.

Just because previous wardens had allowed the visitors to gain admittance outside the dress code for visitation, doesn’t mean the rules don’t apply. Ever drive 3 miles an hour over the maximum allowable speed limit and the cops won’t pull you. You still broke the law.

The article doesn’t also say how many other “non-journalist” people have been turned away before, just her and she is a reporter. By entering the prison, and being observable by inmates, she should be in conformance of the rules.
