Hollywood actor Johnny Depp has made about £3m in just a few hours through a sale of his debut art collection.
Depp sold 780 prints through Castle Fine Art's 37 galleries, including in London's Covent Garden, within hours of announcing the sale on Instagram.
The Friends And Heroes collection depicts people who have inspired him, including Rolling Stone Keith Richards and Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor.
"I've always used art to express my feelings," the 59-year-old said.
"My paintings surround my life, but I kept them to myself and limited myself. No one should ever limit themselves."
The actor said he used his art, which also depicted actor Al Pacino and folk legend Bob Dylan, to "reflect on those who matter most to me, like my family, friends and people I admire".
All 780 pieces sold within hours on Thursday, with framed individual images going for £3,950 and the complete portfolio of four images selling for £14,950.
Depp's post on Instagram, captioned only "NOW AT #CASTLEFINEART", prompted a rush of traffic to the gallery's website causing it to crash.

That said, portrait artists do use photos in the way they structure an image. After all, eyes, noses, chins, brows, etc. have measurable relationships to each other.
From a quick glance at Depp's portraits, I would say they are quite good. They convey unmistakable likenesses of his subjects and are interestingly composed and unique.
The test will be how their appeal grows from exposure to time. If, after having seen them many times, we and his audience find their appeal growing, we can conclude he has done well.
LoL!
Even better at a distance. The Pacino is particularly good.
Yeah. Love Frank Miller and of course Neal Adams.
Very nice. He should use the money he makes from selling the art for therapy.
Frank Miller is the man. Adams definitely also is iconic.
cant tell on the pacino but he is painting red into the eyes of the other three. Of course, not very realistic on Keith because for him the eyes should be bloodshot into oblivion..lolol
Here is Depp on Ellen giving her the elephant painting he made:

Painting is first seen at like 1:16 of the video.
My guess is that he has a photo, enlarges on copy machine, takes the copy and places graphite paper underneath and traces out lines. I’ve done this a lot, many do. Then you paint the outlined paper, get real creative. It’s a fun, creative way to turn out some interesting art. I’d bet all I own that he did this technique. They are very nice. But not without a template.
heh
Better that I could do!.....THANKS!....................
You’re welcome!
