Frequent aspirin use is linked with lower ovarian cancer risk in individuals with multiple risk factors, according to a new study.
"Ovarian cancer is the most fatal gynecologic cancer. Most known risk factors of ovarian cancer—such as family history, mutations in the BRCA 1 and 2 genes, and endometriosis—can't be modified," says Britton Trabert, Ph.D., MS. This new research holds promise because it shows an actionable step people at higher risk of ovarian cancer can take to reduce their chance of developing the disease.
"Daily, or almost daily, aspirin use was associated with a 13% reduction in ovarian cancer risk and we found that aspirin benefited most subgroups. Importantly, this research provides further evidence that ovarian cancer chemoprevention with frequent aspirin use could benefit people in higher-risk subgroups."
A 2018 study showed daily aspirin use is linked with reduced ovarian cancer rates. However, individual studies have not been able to look at whether aspirin would be beneficial to people at varying risk of disease.
Subgroups were defined by individual factors like endometriosis, obesity, a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, pregnancy, oral contraceptive use, tubal ligation, and by number of risk factors: none, one, and two or more.
"Aspirin use has been linked with major adverse events, including internal bleeding and stroke. We wanted to evaluate whether aspirin could prevent ovarian cancer in people at higher risk. Since aspirin helped people who had two or more risk factors, we hope patients and clinicians can use this research to have an informed conversation when it comes to potential preventive measures. Individuals should consult their health care providers before beginning new medication in order to most appropriately balance any potential risks with the potential benefits."

How do you know if you have ovaries?
13% doesn’t seem like enough to get too excited about.
They tend to do funny things to you now and then.
I wuz taking aspirin for 10 years,
I developed ovaries.
I don’t take anything but aspirin for pain. (I’ve personally never had any stomach issues with it, though I know some people need to be careful of that.)
Even when I’ve had very painful issues and docs gave me powerful stuff, it didn’t help much more than aspirin - sometimes not at all - and left my mind feeling like a dust bunny under the bed.
With aspirin, that doesn’t happen - you can still use your mind productively.
“Aspirin use has been linked with major adverse events, including internal bleeding and stroke.”
The internal bleeding part I get, but stroke? Aspirin would reduce clotting, shouldn’t it prevent strokes?
I wonder if there are are other alternatives if it counteracts ovarian cancer, such as a natural anti-inflammatory? From a quick web search it looks like there are a lot of plant-based ones. Plus omega-3 fatty acids from fish.
(One can never eat enough fish, coming from a true pescatarian.)
Here’s a map of world ovarian cancer rates, adjusted for age:
Looks like places where people eat less processed foods make a difference.
Aspirin originally WAS plant-based. It came from the willow tree and was used for thousands of years for pain; and then chemists learned to reproduce it more productively.
I'm a guy...
Wasn’t the acetylation to make it less irritating to the stomach?
I got six hours of college biology and stayed at a Holiday Inn Express a few times.
It is known that those with ovaries are bi; be it polar or sexual with over whelming majority being polar.
Just like aspirin helps with heart Disease? Or not
“Frequent aspirin use shows promise for preventing ovarian cancer in individuals at higher risk”
Note the subtle gas lighting.
Not “women at higher risk”, but “individuals at higher risk”
It’s astounding how quickly the PC police gets everyone to knuckle under.
Not once was the word “women” was mentioned in the whole article. It’s either “individuals” or “people”
That went over the head of even most freepers!
Aspirin is also the best pregnancy prevention out there. Women simply clamp an aspirin between their knees and hold it there.
