Tunisia okays new constitution giving president unchecked power, in low-turnout vote

Monday’s vote came a year to the day after the president sacked the government and suspended parliament in a dramatic blow to the only democracy to have emerged from the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings.

For some Tunisians, his moves sparked fears of a return to autocracy, but they were welcomed by others, fed up with high inflation and unemployment, political corruption and a system they felt had brought few improvements.

His opponents say the moves aimed to install an autocracy more than a decade after the fall of dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, but his supporters say they were necessary after years of corruption and political turmoil.

Saied has repeatedly threatened his enemies in recent months, issuing video diatribes against unnamed foes he describes as “germs”, “snakes” and “traitors.”

Georgie Ann Geyer ran a puff piece on the country during the Arab spring. Things didn’t’t turn out as expected. She was my lefty crush.

“Georgie Ann Geyer...She was my lefty crush.”

Interesting. She was...what? 75? 80? I know she died a couple years ago, and she was in her 80s then. It must have been a loooong crush.

he only democracy to have emerged from the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings.
__________

Who was in charge of the US diplomacy then?
Oh yes, Barack Hussein Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton!
They totally mishandled the Arab Uprising!
The Arabs in the streets did ask for some decent governments then.
Instead of helping to install some friendly governments, as this was the chance for it, once a century, they ended up with all king of ISIS and Muslim Brotherhood in charge.
It was the time to engage US diplomacy in the full. No need of military, just skilled negotiating.
But they blew it, 100%
The wars from 2011 are still going on in Syria, Libya and Yemen.

She died a couple of years ago in her 80s. How long ago did you have that crush on her?

The Arabs can’t handle democracy. But they are not really that much different from the Russians. You would think that the Russians would have gotten a grasp on democracy by now because they’re sort of in Europe. But again, they’re not. And they were never influenced by the ideals of Enlightenment. So the Arabs and the Russians cannot have democracy.

“never influenced by the ideals of Enlightenment” pretty much covers 90% of the world.

*She died a couple of years ago in her 80s. How long ago did you have that crush on her?*

Washington Week in Review. 80’s. She once went on and said men should be allowed to have their private clubs. Some controversy over Augusta not allowing women as members. Then there’s the 1983 invasion of Grenada. She argued the liberals could get behind and support Reagan’s decision.

Lovely and classy. Beautiful smile. It was a shame she brought no kids into the world but she managed to lead an exemplary life traveling the entire world. Never married. Longed for that woman.

OK, I looked for a reasonable picture from a few decades ago. Still not my type.

You can see her on some CSPAN videos going back to the 80’s. She was in her 50’s back then. Very charming and intelligent at the same time. How many ‘blondes’ like that?

20 years older than me. Another cougar crush.
