A relative I haven’t spoken to in years is fraudulently applying to my department at a large university. To put it simply, this is a potential Rachael Dolezal situation. “Connie” is applying for a research and teaching position in my department. Her mother was married to my uncle for about 15 years and for 15 years I spent most weekends and every holiday and summer with Connie. We were quite close as kids.
For full clarity: Connie is white. She is not an immigrant, she is not adopted, and both of her parents come from white, American multi-generational wealth. There is not a hospital, museum, or major university in our city without her family name on at least one building. Her mother and my uncle got divorced quite a while ago, but our mothers are still very good friends. Connie and I lost touch as we grew up but reconnected on social media a few years ago.
When we were introduced in the interview, she pretended not to know me. During her team interview with me, two department chairs, and four other faculty, Connie spoke passionately about being a white-passing woman of color who has to confront racism daily, and how her past struggles with an impoverished upbringing as an immigrant in the U.S. have shaped her teaching values. I was speechless the entire time. Her resume is impressive, which makes me concerned she’s been lying to get certain grants/opportunities or that her resume is false.
The two department chairs were very impressed with her, a few people are neutral, and the rest seemed uncomfortable during the interview and passed on notes saying such. How do I approach this? I’m struggling with ethics vs optics: it’s unethical to put Connie forward as a voice for an underrepresented student population and an expert on certain racial and social justice movements and issues. My mentor (an older white male) told me to stay out of it because the optics are poor. I’m white, and I have had a privileged life that allows me to live comfortably on an academic salary. It would look like I’m attacking a candidate based on race in a predominantly white department. Regardless of optics, I would be complicit in this unethical situation if I didn’t say anything and she’s offered the job. So far nobody else has been invited to interview.
If she identifies as black, she’s obviously black.
Right?
Have the courage to do the right thing. Why do you even have to ask?
Sadly, this is not uncommon in a university environment. I'd be willing to bet the position was not widely advertised, often because a decision has already been made.
University faculty or administration jobs usually attract multiple candidates. The larger and more well-known the university is, the more candidates. This is especially true for fluff positions promoting the diversity gospel.
Given the facts outlined here, I would not be surprised if a donation or endowment is driving the hiring process here. I'd advise the person here to keep their mouth shut long enough to see if any other candidates come forward and/or if there is a colleague in the department they could trust, to raise these concerns privately.

“What’s your point?”
The Lapps are Scandinavian aboriginals and could be thought of as European versions of Indians.
Liz’s older relatives were probably unaware of that possibility, so they assumed she had American Indian heritage.
“Your framing should be, “I’m concerned this will hurt the department when it comes out.” (Not if — when.)”
The decision of whether it will hurt the department or not is dependent with how the department management is going to handle the basic dishonesty of the applicant.
But in many jobs in the US today, honesty is not a real interest by the employer. There are jobs out there that just require attendance and do not have need of morals or integrity at all. And the employers are aware of them and are just looking for a replacement for the last one that didn’t show up today. And if you think that is a junk job, look at minimum wage jobs and you’ll find a lot of them.
I worked security for intel right after I retired from the military and heard, from a high intel exec, the statement, “I just can’t believe the lack of loyalty of the minimum wage employee.” Hint there. They don’t care whether they have good employees working for them or not with these types of expectations. And pretty soon, all you get is liars to apply. And they are interchangeable with honest people in their ideal as long as they don’t steal something that has any real worth. And good perspective employees in time don’t apply when the attitude of the management is known. Slippery slope.

When someone of the oppressed race seeks equal treatment with the other job applicants, report her to the proper authorities.
Dude, you’re way too deep into this. Slow down and enjoy the ride. I simply meant that she was faking her way into academics just like liz warren. The actual or claimed heritage/race is irrelevant to my comment.
Correct. We've avoided doing these tests, but my daughter did one and discovered her mother, my wife, has 2% Nigerian DNA to go along with a slightly higher Native American amount.
The Native American, we actually knew about since, among other things, we can trace records back to a half sister of Pocahontas. But the Nigerian 2% . . . I told her it could only be because some of her distant ancestors were slave holders and that was a common source. Somewhere sonny boy got too close to a housekeeper or a nanny and the child was passed off as a cousin.
There are few things that will warp a male brain more than the mere sight of female genitalia.
The family member should’ve said something right then and there. Anything less than telling ALL of the interviewers is abetting the liar.
I wonder how most people on here would have felt about or characterized the act of helping a black pass as white 100 years ago?
I’m going to identify as a black female lesbian.
Well, nobody believes that I’m the queen of England, so I’ll try this...

In old New Orleans:
“for those women deemed quadroons and octoroons, persons one-fourth and one-eighth black respectively, they had standards that both seduced and appalled Creole men and incensed many Creole women
....
Quadroon mothers, acting as brokers and often placees themselves, would accompany their daughter to the quadroon balls in attempt to strike a bargain with an interested white man in attendance in order to place their daughter in that man’s care for life. These balls were well known and in operation specifically for the purpose of inter-racial relations. They served as the courting ground of young white men of means looking for exotic darker skinned mistresses…”

Opportunity is knocking - tell them she’s your first cousin so you must be black too - punched your ticket all the way to retirement
The year is 2022. You can pretend to be male or female, but you can’t pretend to be whatever race you want to be.

You are a Coward and an assistant in her Fraud for not outting her.
Telling the truth to affirmative action hiring authorities is aiding and abetting anti-white racism.
If you like your anti-white racism you can keep your anti-white racism.
Go ahead and let her have the job... I mean, you do know who and what you are, right.? You're a liberal.! You have no sense of moral conscience, no feeling of what's right or wrong, no values as it applies to human life or sense of fair play..
Take her to the side and make a deal where you get an honest 10% of her pay for going along with the ruse.
Obviously she must ensure she is on point with that she’s about to say regarding this candidate. She’s already errored by not revealing her own conflict of interest since the candidate appears to be a family member. She doesn’t necessarily know the family history and admittedly doesn’t know if the resume is bogus. She should reveal her conflict of interest, stick to objective facts but keep her personal feelings out of it. She must keep her feelings about what she believes of this candidate’s white privilege out of the discussion.
