TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) â It was described as chaos in the air Wednesday as an American Airlines flight from Tampa to Nashville was diverted after experiencing severe turbulence.
The plane made an emergency landing in Birmingham, Alabama. Eight people on board suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
Temple Terrace native Travis Hamilton (snip) was in the airplane bathroom when, about an hour into the flight, it felt like he was on a roller coaster.
âBefore I could finish washing my hands, I was on the roof of the bathroom,â Hamilton said. âUp and down. 10 seconds.â
Hamilton said when it stopped, all he could see was blood.
âI looked in the mirror and it was kind of running down my face,â Hamilton said.
He had to kick his way out the bathroom. He described what he saw next as chaos in the cabin.
âOxygen masks were down,â Hamilton said. âBabies were screaming. Everybodyâs kind of like, what just happened?â
Hamilton then realized, he wasnât the only one who was hurt.
âThe one stewardess, man, she was messed up,â Hamilton said. âThereâs blood just all over her face and the other one couldnât hardly turn her head or neck or anything.â
(snip)
When the plane landed, Hamilton got checked out by fire rescue. He had a small cut on his head and kept it moving. Hamilton said that all he got in return for his rough ride was a $12 meal voucher and AAdvantage miles, which wasnât good enough.
While he ended up getting to his destination in Nashville, Hamilton believes the airline should be punished.
âThe fact they gave less than a minute warning to put on our seat belt, they need to be held accountable for it,â Hamilton said.

“When the plane landed, Hamilton got checked out by fire rescue. He had a small cut on his head and kept it moving.”
Kept what moving?
“The flight attendants were freaking out calling out Directions”
Were they yelling DOWN!, UP!
I was on a transpacific on a Singapore Airlines flight going from HK to LA, that hit clear air turbulence while they were serving a meal. The food cart hit the roof of the plane when it came down it landed on a flight attendant. The flight had to divert to Tokyo.
You can believe that or not.
I was on another plane from Guam to HK. An engine caught fire and the plane had to make an emergency return to Guam. The pilot asked for everyone to remain seated so immediately all the women got up to go to the bathroom.
Nailed it! Then you’ll probably remember the one where it shows the pilots laughing in the cockpit as they’re jerking the plane around telling people that there’s more turbulence coming... that was probably more apropos.
Every time Ive flown the flight crew tells you to keep your seat belt on unless you’re going from one place to the other. Good advice.

Ah, he has an agenda.
First engine goes out, 1 hour delay, second engine goes out 2 hour delay, third engine goes out 3 hour delay, let’s just hope the fourth engine doesn’t go out we’d be up here all day!
Give the little boy a Happy meal all should be well.
“ Hey, if an aircraft carrier can lose an F/A-18 Super Hornet off from its deck due to “unexpected” weather then certainly…”
That’s different. Jury’s still out in that one but… no.
It is my impression that this guy is looking for a payday. I already heard him on Tampa radio three times today already.
“Just wear your mask and it will all be fine.”
No depressurization. No need for masks.
Was on a Delta flight to Honolulu Hawaii, about 3 hours into the flight. BOOM and shuddering and orange glow all down the port side. The engine had given way the fan cowling was gone in places and flames where pouring out where the fan air should be. They cut the fuel and the Captain in his best calm voice said we had a engine anomaly and were too far to turn back to California we were diverting to Hilo as it was the closest airport thank goodness for ETOPS ratings it’s the only reason a twin jet can cross water. Clear air turbulence sucks and it’s hard to predict let alone detect it doesn’t show up on radar.
Yes, remember that one too! Ha hahahhaaa...
Not the O2 masks. The CONvid masks. Safe! Effective! 😂🙌
It’s why I use the restroom before a flight
One cannot predict turbulence. The man’s a wuss
One minute is plenty of time to get your seat belt on
“Not the O2 masks. The CONvid masks. Safe! Effective!”
I know. Your comment was stupid so I threw a curve. Neither TSA or AA require masks.
Grow up. People like you are exactly why our nation is in trouble.
