Tiny turtles are undoubtedly adorable creatures, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning people to steer clear of giving them a cuddle and a kiss following a salmonella outbreak.
The agency said 15 people have been infected with salmonella with five hospitalized, though no deaths have been reported yet, according to an investigation notice.
People can get salmonella by touching a turtle or something in its environment and then touching their mouth or handling food, regardless of the animal’s size, the CDC said.

My very first pet, when I was 5 or 6, was a little painted turtle (I mean the species, not that somebody actually painted on it). His name was Billy, and I was heartbroken when he died, but we had a nice burial for him.
Not a hare of a chance that happening...
I had couple of them when I was a kid, but I haven’t seen the little red-eared turtles for about fifty years because they were linked with salmonella back then.
I’ll never forget my four-year-old younger brother putting my pet turtle in his mouth! At the time, I hoped it was my brother who would die! No one did, though.
Had one of those. His name was Jean Lafitte.
My daughter when young had a pet turtle. We thought she’d tire of him, but she loved the little guy. Was a much easier pet than her yippy dog.

Reminds me of being a kid and going in Woolworths. In the back of the store they had a pet section which had small turtles for sale along with parakeets.
Nothing new. I remember the same scare back in 1958 to keep kids from buying painted turtles from the stores for home aquariums.
I did.
I guess I’m doomed then.
Vet told me years ago that he wouldn’t let his children have any reptile because of the threat of salmonella. Said turtles were to worst.

The risk of Salmonella from these small pet turtles was well described in the mid 1970’s when I was in medical school.
And to take it home they would put your turtle in one of those carryout containers that Chinese restaurants use for rice.
The risk has been there but it has never slowed pet stores from selling them.
We had about four rounds of turtles, always named Gopher and Shelly.
