Hungarian star outraged because she could not order in Hungarian in a Budapest café

The former reality TV star was furious that the staff was not speaking Hungarian in a Budapest café. Merci did not excel in English in the 10th series of Való Világ, but she has reportedly made improvements since then. The young girl thinks that these days she would have no problem ordering in English but finds it unacceptable that she cannot use her mother tongue in one of Budapest’s busiest cafés

Two thoughts, here. First: "former reality TV star" always is the same as "attention whore will screw for fifteen more minutes of fame".

Second: seems like it wasn't so long ago folks here in the US were complaining about walking into a Mexican restaurant and not being able to order in English. lol

She’s right. And there is a difference between a multinational chain and a local ethnic dive.

She didn't say it was her biggest problem - she just said she expected people living in Hungary to speak Hungarian. Similarly, I expect people living in the US to speak comprehensible English, though increasingly they don't.

Well, Magyar is fiendishly difficult. I knew French and German before learning polski and it still was very difficult, yet I couldn’t find any linkages in Magyar. Completely alien.

So this lass would be right to be unhappy that people in a cafe in Budapest don’t speak Magyar

Right now....whether in Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Paris...hired-help for cafes, bars and resturants is getting to be impossible to find. So they are all expanding efforts to hire non-natives. That means if you were in Budapest last year as a bar-waitress...you probably were approached to take up a job in another country. That means your old job in Budapest lays there...empty, unless they entice someone from a lesser country (like Bulgaria or Romania).

Everyone, in this after-Covid era....is stealing each other’s employees.

All foreign workers who do not know the local language. That would be irritating.

Just speak English, problem's solved. Hungary isn't the only country with that problem. Go to Israel, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, just to name a few where you'll encounter workers in a restaurant who may not know the local language but they probably know some English.
