The Big Apple has begun to rot this summer, by the smell of it.
There were 5,746 calls to 311 regarding the outdoor odor complaints this year through June 30, according to the New York Post. It's an increase of 54% since the first six months of 2021.
An New York Police Department spokesperson reported 280 civil summonses were issued to city residents for public urination during the first three months of this year, an increase from 169 since last year. This comes after then-Mayor Bill de Blasio decriminalized public urination in 2016. Police issued 19,456 summonses in 2015.
Meanwhile, 14% of city parks had closed their restrooms as of July 2, according to inspection data.
Despite the smell, the average rent of $5,058 per month in June is $83 higher than the average in May and $1,136 higher than the average in June 2021, according to a report from Douglas Elliman and Miller Samuel.

file it under phrases and terms I never thought I would hear
All cities are shxtholes so no surprise.
Sanitation is one of the cornerstones of modern civilization. Without it, we backslide, for sure.
I can’t speak for any other big cities in other countries around the world as I have not done any international travel in about a decade , but I can tell you that all of Japan’s such as Tokyo , Osaka , Nagoya , Yokohama etc...are thriving and they are clean as well as safe . Abe’s assassination aside ...
So are Canadian cities.
NYC always stinks in the summer.
Well look at the bright side... Years from now when the balloon finally goes up, those area will be rich in potassium nitrate... Js...
How's that for environmental responsibility?
And not even mentioning the unrestricted violent crime there, is anything more uncivilized than living in an open sewer? Certainly not.
These two hotbeds of Leftist wokism are as uncivilized as any place on earth.
[Maybe it’s on its way to some positively medieval ‘maladies’ like typhus and cholera??]
We got a vax for that!
Well, American culture is populated with a LOT of feral types. It looks like spend outrageously on tattoos yet never bother to wash their clothes or themselves....they live, work, function and breed at the level of animals.
Maybe NY can just set up a ‘sheep dipping’ station they can all wade through!
There was no 311 complaint line back then, but I definitely recall the pervasive smell of urine. OK purely anecdotal, but there was no "good old days" for me on this issue.
Why is it even news? /smirk

You would need around 4,695.08$ (639,705.45¥) monthly in Tokyo to maintain the same standard of life that you can have with 8,700.00$ in New York, NY un 2022 .
When I came to Japan in 1985 Tokyo was much more expensive than NYC and gasoline was 3 times more expensive here . Now gasoline prices in US and Japan are about the same .
