Japan wants up to 9 nuclear reactors running this winter

Japan will have as many as nine nuclear reactors in operation this winter, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Thursday, seeking to ensure stable power supplies during peak demand.

With five reactors currently running, the additions would boost combined capacity from nuclear power to around 10% of the country's electricity needs amid concerns of a power crunch this winter.

"We want to have ample capacity to ensure a stable supply of electricity during peak times," Kishida said. "The national government will take the lead" on restarting these reactors, "making tenacious efforts to secure the understanding and cooperation of local governments and other stakeholders."

In addition, Kishida said he aims to add capacity equivalent to another 10 generators at Japan's fossil fuel power plants, having instructed Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Koichi Hagiuda to advance these efforts.

Japanese utilities have applied to restart 25 nuclear reactors since they were halted following the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi meltdowns. Ten have met the Nuclear Regulation Authority's safety standards and resumed operations, though only five are currently active as others undergo inspections and safety updates.

So do I - not that we’ll have any new plants within the next twenty years, regardless of technology.

That’s the most sane thing I’ve read in quite some time and I’m very happy to see it.

Japan is allied to the West, but unlike Western Europe and the Anglosphere, that nation is not self-destructive. If NATO falters against Russia, their self-preservation instinct will cause the Japanese to seek accommodation with China.

Yeah, but there is more to the story. Vlad gave them 60 days to re- think their sanctions….they get all their NG from Russia via Sakhalin Islands, and huge chunk of their coal, if sanctioned by Vlad, their manufacturing goes to zero.

IMHO, that is very unlikely, unless Japan has an interest in becoming a literal Chinese province. What’s more likely is the securing of an independent nuclear deterrent while attempting to become an offshore balancer, much like Britain for a good deal of the time since the Tudors. That means assisting any country, including Vietnam, Taiwan and the Koreas, that enters China’s gunsights.

This time, put the back-up generators up higher.

Using which tech?
Old fuel-rod pile or something more current and self limited?

“China is the sole operator of this reactor design and currently developing more advanced versions and owns their patent rights”.

Not getting a warm fuzzy on this.
I was hoping for newer American owned tech.

“We want to have ample capacity to ensure a stable supply of electricity during peak times”

THAT should be what every governor of every state should be demanding.

Even Texas run by republicans are not doing this!

Yep. They need to get as many of those nuclear reactors fired back up again as possible.

Nuclear is starting to be considered “green energy” by some greenies. Indeed it speaks well for Japan. The prospect of no electricity kicks global warming to the curb.

The world ought to have at least 200 under construction presently. Without energy, we no longer have a modern society.

And, that's what the radicals (All Democrats) want.
