Greyhound buses drove around with a big sign on the back, depicting Jimmy Carter in a sweater saying "Thanks for taking the bus and saving energy." The movie The Blues Brothers came out and was a big hit. Donald Trump offered to fix the Wollman Skating Rink at his own expense; it had been a Central Park eyesore for as long as I had been going to NYC as a kid. David Berkowitz did the Son of Sam murders, along with (now it appears likely) several other people, most of whom later died violent deaths themselves.

All in all a pretty bleak, miserable time. My early 20s. Little fun, lots of pain, much of it self-inflicted, if I'm honest.
