When Mystrichrome was fresh and new, it was not an easy paint to get ahold of. If you owned a Mystichrome Cobra and got into an accident that required paint repair, you were in for a nasty surprise. Only certain body shops around the country could spray the paint, and to do so, a Ford representative had to be present. Not only that, but that Ford rep was responsible for bringing the paint, overseeing the work done, then re-sealing the can and bringing the leftover paint back with them.
...In Patterson’s video, he shows the cost of just 16 ounces of Mystichrome paint, which comes in at a whopping $3,335.27. That works out to over $26,600 per gallon. Keep in mind that that price figure is only for the paint...

Wow!...That car looks amazing. Sooooo beautiful.
I call BS. Earl Scheib will paint that car for $99.95
Too bad the body style is so ugly.
“I call BS. Earl Scheib will paint that car for $99.95”
That wax 1979. 25 years before the Cobra.
Yes, my post was humor.
Back in the '80s when my teenage male car gene kicked in I had a particular fascination with DeLoreans. I bought a couple books on the history, and followed the stories in the news.
One book had a bunch of background and history of stainless bodies, gull wing doors, etc. and as I recall there was a pic of a DMC-12 parked next to a (IIRC) '36 stainless bodied Ford.
Truly a first world problem. Only someone with cash to burn would care about such a paint job on a car.
I like it.
Painted a 65 mustang convertible with Enron in 1978. Concord Blue Merelliac. Looked beautiful. Best paint my father and I ever did
$29.95 at Maaco...
Can’t drive it on South Carolina roads. State law declares that a car’s color must match the one on it’s registration.
“Only $99.95! Any car, any color!” I remember those ads from my childhood.
Maybe not a a bad deal if you do all the prep yourself. Prep labor is where most of the cost is for good paint jobs, $26,000/gal Mystichrome notwithstanding. Though if you go through with all that work, you might really want a better quality paint than what Earl was using.
Might’ve been the same car. I live in Spanish Fort, AL which is on I-10. He could have been traveling. Can’t believe there are too many challengers on the road painted that same scheme.
“Some years back, a lot of people in the Jeep off road community started coating their entire vehicles in epoxy bed liner,”
Just be careful doing the prep work, unlike this guy.
One of the interwebs epic threads.

I shot the frame of my antique truck with Imron years ago. Frame up restomod. I took it to a highly recommended muffler shop and when I came back to pick it up, they had welded the exhaust hangers to the frame. I about lost my mind.
Looking back at that thread it was a whole year before 9/11/01. Just remembering what a different world it was then...
“Local gearhead legend has it that Ford built a few stainless cars? And supposedly illegal on the road in many states.”
There is/was a company that was making Jeep bodies out of stainless in the ‘70’s-80’s.
The biggest problem with stainless in an environment like that is the vibration and twisting causes it to work harden and crack over time. I saw one and it had multiple cracks radiating out from the mounting holes. I never heard back if it re-cracked after I welded it but would bet it did.
There are some vintage Earl Scheib commercials over at YouTube.
And then there is the joke from The Nutty Professor:
Reggie’s mama’s so fat that the %$%#$ gets her toenails painted at Earl Scheib!
