Melissa Bond was caring for two infant children — a newborn, and a year-old toddler with Down syndrome. It was 2009, and she had recently lost her magazine job. Her marriage was disintegrating, and she spent night after night pacing her house in Salt Lake City, watching the hours tick by.
When a physician gave her a prescription for Ativan — a “strong, fast-acting sedative hypnotic” that he guaranteed would help her get some shut-eye — she accepted it, no questions asked.
“I was in such a state of desperation that I didn’t research the drugs,” Bond, now 53, told The Post.

sleep is secondary indication
Ativan is THE MOST abused prescription sleep drug in the world! This drug WILL make you a sleep walking and SLEEP DRIVING zombie with zero recollection of anything the next day. Look at youtube!!
Oh wait! Disregard that. I meant Ambien! Not Ativan. Ativan is a benzo tho...highly addictive.
Big Pharma says “safe and effective” and earned Faucis Good Labkeeping Seal of Approval.
I thought Ativan was more of an anti-anxiety drug rather than a sleep aid.
There are lots of sleep aids that aren’t addictive.
Ativan is powerfully bad news.
Are there? I thought anything that is a sleep aid could lead to dependency?
Old friend in Florida was once lots of fun, then she started Ativan and became extremely paranoid. Accused me of stealing from her refrigerator. I called her son in NY and told him she needed to be in some kind f supervised housing (if not the looney bin). Sad, really.
Sounds like she went to a Dr. Feelgood pill mill.

I take some melatonin from the health supplements store... not every night but say one in three nights and this is mostly to stay on a consistent sleep pattern. Very mild but seems to work and it certainly isn’t addictive.
I just went off Ambien after taking it every night for a year. No problem.
It was 20 years ago for me - took Ambien nightly for over a year, then stopped cold turkey with no aftereffects.
But I also know of a distant relative who took her car out and drove until it ran out of gas without ever being aware of what she was doing.
My periodontist used Ativan for sedation-—two the night before, and two more an hour before surgery. Oh, it’ll make you sleep, all right.
Melatonin is pretty safe.
I took that once. ONCE! Wall to wall nightmares.
It is nice that folks are beginning to realize sleep disorders aren't the same thing as laziness.
There’s herbal stuff that has various combinations of chamomile, lemon balm, valerian root, hops, melatonin and so on. If you took it too often it might create mild dependency as far as sleep, but not addiction per se like opioids do for some people.
Should have taken OxyContin.
If she’s going to take anything.
Her problem was her choices prior to taking pharmaceuticals.
Or....just a tumbler of hooch. But then you have the dependency risk there too.
I took Ativan for two years and can tell you that it is one of the most satisfying sleeps I’ve ever had and no grogginess the next day, but I understand that people are different.
Ativan also brought on very vivid, very cool dreams.
