My father worked in a maximum security state prison. We lived on the other side of the street on a rural county road near the prison farm grounds. Inmates working the farm would come by on Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving where my mom and dad made a nice meal. They would sit and chat a lot mostly out on the deck or in our mancave basement. They made it clear that they were not very nice people outside the prison structure. Some of them would bring presents. Carved bars of soap into hand painted figurines forrl the Christmas tree, a wooden step stool, corn husk dolls for the grandkids, and even some bottles of prison wine.

I learned a lot from those men about human nature. My dad used to tell me that about half the men in maximum security prison are not guilty of what they were sent in for. But they are guilty of many more things the state didn't want to pursue. Some far worse. Some just bad the same. They still belonged in prison.

In fact, yesterday I had two different conversations with co-workers who are at least to the left of me (I wouldn't necessarily call them liberals) and after weighing their ideas, me explaining why that wouldn't work (banning "machine guns") we came to the agreement that at least warehousing them for ten years for the first felony, and 30 for the second would work.

It won't deter, but it will keep them in a cage away from civilized humans. We don't let gorillas walk around our streets, neither should we let NAPAs.

I don't care how much we need to spend to keep the savages at bay, if civilization is going to be maintained, it's worth it.

There's a lot of territory between those two.

Ten years for a violent felony, for a first offense. 30 years for the second. Life if a third is necessary.

You're not going to civilize a wild animal, especially in a prison. Just get them off the streets.

I'm not a big fan of long prison sentences.

You do the crime, you do the time - BUT, if whatever you did was so heinous that society needs to be protected from you for more than 10 years, or more than twice for a felony (ie three strikes)....a short drop and a sudden stop.
