I installed a tab refresh addon and set FR to refresh every 5 minutes. That way I could surf other tabs and when I saw the FR favicon come back
on this tab, I knew the site was back.

What happened?? Just a guess. I think it was probably something relatively simple like the web service getting knocked off line. I think it unlikely it was a serious hardware problem that would have require John to make a road trip.
