The Volcanic Eifel is a peaceful region in western Germany. For hundreds of thousands of years, volcanic forces raged here, before settling down. But could these natural forces reawaken?

Today's Volcanic Eifel was formed from cooled lava and volcanic ash. But deep below the surface, the earth is still bubbling. In fact, there are many indications that the rumbling underground is actually hot magma making its way to the Earth’s surface. How great is the danger of another eruption here in the Eifel, by far the youngest volcanic area in Central Europe?

On the shores of the region’s Laacher See, a special phenomenon is attracting the attention of scientists. Here, carbon dioxide gas bubbles rise. They come from a huge magma chamber at a depth of about 40 kilometers - the so-called "Eifel Plume". What do these bubbles tell us about the processes in the Earth's interior? Scientists are certain that the volcanoes will reawaken at some point. But when and where will it happen? To find out as precisely as possible, scientists are constantly listening - all the way down to the depths of the Earth.

Volcanoes are like liberals, if you don’t eradicate them they will hang around and eventually destroy everything good you ever did.

Sad thing is, like Volcanoes, you can never truly eradicate liberals, because they are always hiding in plane site acting like nothing is up, until its time to get you.

For reasons I don’t know, there are large masses of magma of various sizes at varying distances from the surface of the earth. These are called hot spots. Yellowstone for example is above one such hot spot, and has been for over 2 million years. The surface of the Yellowstone area is the most recent area above that hot spot, but it has been traced westward leaving a string of volcanic areas for at least 16 million years. As the surface of the earth and the hot spot have become closer to each other there have been eruptive phases to the hot spot. There have been at least 3 huge eruptions at the Yellowstone hot spot over the past 2 million years, leaving volcanic ash traces over almost one third of the US each time. There have also been about 70 smaller eruptions there since the last big one around 640,000 years ago. The next super eruption there may be due in the next 100.000 years. My father has written a very boring novel about such a situation in current time. I hope to rewrite it in a more entertaining vein before I die.

I don’t know where I’ll go if Yellowstone blows. Probably doesn’t matter as the entire world will be affected in one way or another.

The one I referenced is in Virginia outside of Harrisonburg in the Valley. Spent an afternoon there 40 years ago and found several pieces.

My Comment #50 about “pieces” was a response to an earlier comment which stated: “some columnar basalt structure still visible, mainly as small pieces of float on the ground.” I was wondering if I lived close enough to this site to go collecting. See Comment #52 for more info.
