Boron Supplementation Inhibits the Growth and Local Expression of IGF-1 in Human Prostate Adenocarcinoma (LNCaP) Tumors in Nude Mice (Reduced PSA & Tumor Size)

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a serine protease and one of the most abundant proteins secreted by the human prostate epithelium. PSA is used as a well-established marker of prostate cancer. The involvement of PSA in several early events leading to the development of malignant prostate tumors has made it a target for prevention and intervention. It is thought that PSA cleaves insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), providing increased local levels of IGF-1, leading to tumor growth. Separately, there are data that suggest an enzymatic regulatory role for dietary boron, which is a serine protease inhibitor. In this study we have addressed the use of boric acid as a PSA inhibitor in an animal study. We proposed that dietary supplementation with boric acid would inhibit PSA and reduce the development and proliferation of prostate carcinomas in an animal model. We tested this hypothesis using nude mice implanted subcutaneously with LNCaP cells in Matrigel. Two groups (10 animals/group) were dosed with boric acid solutions (1.7, 9.0 mgB/kg/day) by gavage. Control group received only water. Tumor sizes were measured weekly for 8 weeks. Serum PSA and IGF-1 levels were determined at terminal sacrifice. The size of tumors was decreased in mice exposed to the low and high dose of boric acid by 38% and 25%, respectively. Serum PSA levels decreased by 88.6% and 86.4%, respectively, as compared to the control group. There were morphological differences between the tumors in control and boron-dosed animals, including a significantly lower incidence of mitotic figures in the boron-supplemented groups. Circulating IGF-1 levels were not different among groups, though expression of IGF-1 in the tumors was markedly reduced by boron treatment, which we have shown by immunohistochemistry. These data indicate that low-level dietary boron supplementation reduced tumor size and content of a tumor trophic factor, IGF-1.

The Upper Tolerable Limit of boron is 20 mg/day, with ConsumerLab stating 25 mg a day for extended periods of time have caused hair loss and upset stomach, among a few other side effects. The lowest amount used in this study equates to about five times or more than that amount, for most men. That said, the 89% decrease in PSA and the 38% decrease in prostate tumor size in just eight weeks is remarkable.

best to get boron in the form of borax, the detergent you buy off the shelf. It’s pure borax. Mix 1/4 tsp in a liter of water and drink one of those 5 days week, 2 off.

dissolves calcifications and balances calcium/mag

You should not drink a liter of that a day—that is whacked out.

From a source at Earth Clinic, it appears you are way off:

Just a very important note:
The suggested borax doses are very inaccurate! They are based on the premise that a teaspoon of borax is 4 grams. The weight of Borax is NOT 4gm per Teaspoon, it’s actually 8.65gm per metric teaspoon, which means you’re taking more than double the stated 113mg and 56mg.

In actual fact,

1/8 tsp = 119mg of boron

1/4 tsp = 238 mg of boron

(BORON, not BORAX)

https://www.earthclinic.com/mobile/remedies/borax/borax-dosages/

The US teaspoon is the same as a metric teaspoon:

“For nutritional labeling and medicine in the US, the teaspoon is defined the same as a metric teaspoon—precisely 5 millilitres”

I take a 6 mg boron supplement a few times a week. One purported effect of boron is de-calcifying the pineal gland. That and using a non-flouride toothpaste is supposed to help.

Folks, I strongly encourage using independently validated boron sources.

I get my standard boron from Swanson Vitamins (“Triple Boron” or “Ultra Albion Boron Bororganic Glycine”) or TwinLabs (“Tri-Boron”).

For boron in the calcium fructoborate form, I get it from Move Free in this version of their supplement, which provides just over 5 mg of boron a serving:

Another way to lower PSA level is to take IP-6 & Inositol. I consumed 6 capsules a day and it brought down my PSA level from 17 to 12 in three weeks. That is nearly a %30 decrease.

I am on ‘Active Surveillance’ for prostate cancer. My Urologist told me that simply lowering my PSA was not necessarily desired. If the medication affects only the PSA level and not the cancer, it can mask important indications that the cancer is getting worse.

you are wrong. Did you cherry pick something from the site or what?

From EARTHCLINIC (AND TED);

Borax Dosage for Men and Women
Earth Clinic’s Ted recommends ¼ teaspoon (940 mg ~ 1,000 mg) of borax in 1 liter of water for men and 1/8 teaspoon (470 mg ~ 500 mg) of borax in 1 liter of water for women each day. This would give men about 113 mg of boron each day they drink the solution, and women about 56 mg of boron each day.

You will find more dosing information on this page.

Walter Last has popularized another method of dosing borax. He recommends adding a heaping teaspoon to a liter of water and then taking one teaspoon of this borax solution once or twice daily. This solution delivers 25-30 mg of borax (and thus about 3 mg of boron) per dose. He recommends taking it with meals.

Idiotic, you did not say “take a teaspoon.”

You told Free Republic members, “Mix 1/4 tsp in a liter of water and drink one of those 5 days week, 2 off.”

Care to delete your stupid, dangerous, post?

what is wrong with you? you are not a very nice person, that’s for sure. I said a quarter tsp (1/4) IN A LITRE OF WATER and drink that daily for 5 days. 2 days off. what are you missing?

The Upper Tolerable Limit is 20 mg of boron a day.

Your measurements are inexact and are encouraging what will be much higher amounts. Even “Ted,” the “guy” at EarthClinic from “Bangkok, Thailand” you quote, says to start at 1/16 of a teaspoon, which now gets it into the 20 mg range, if a teaspoon is actually four grams of borax.

From “Ted:”

“It is fine to even start as low as 1/16 of teaspoon of borax in a liter of water if you want to prevent side effects but beneficial effects will also take more time to see results. It will still work the same. The length of taking it is always longer also.”

There is a book by Dr. Shamsuddin PHD (University of Maryland School of Medicine) where he writes that taking IP6 + Inositol can actually coerce cancer into remission. The controlled research shows that patience who were in the early detection phase of prostate cancer (Gleason 6 through 8 with early stage I/II) could improve their outcome significantly with high daily doses of IP6/Inositol (8 to 16 grams).

The study shows how the supplement can reverse and shrink the size of the prostate AND tumor growth AND also prevents metastasis from occurring. The book makes a very compelling case for taking this remarkable organic medicine. Read the reviews on Amazon from people who are taking it. Mostly 5 stars.

you work really hard trying to prove people wrong that aren’t wrong. I’ve consumed borax exactly as I described for years. I’m sure you haven’t but somehow you want to prove yourself an expert even when you’re wrong. You’d be better served actually asking questions of other posters instead of lashing out and losing your cool.

take care and no need to respond. I surely won’t be responding to you.

Interesting, thanks. It certainly has some positive press. I recently underwent a focal cryogenic treatment, and it seems to have eliminated the cancer, at least so far.
