It is believed to cause hair loss, headaches and heart palpitations — no wonder most Singaporeans give MSG the thumbs down. But the programme Talking Point finds out seven things you may not have known that may change opinions.

Many people think it is linked to a myriad of health issues and side effects, from nausea, heart palpitations and headaches to numbness, excessive thirst and hair loss.

In a recent straw poll on Instagram, the programme Talking Point found that more than half the respondents gave MSG the thumbs down.

But is the popular opinion of this flavour enhancer based on good science? Is MSG really that bad for health? Programme host Rai Kannu comes away with a “shocking fact” as he goes looking for the truth.

It reliably gives me migraines....

Double dittos. Don't believe the BS that it's harmless. I expelled MSG from my life in 2009, and haven't had one since. Not one.

I have a violent migraine every time I ingest it. Several times, after having one of those horrible headaches, I’ve done a food review and found that I had unknowingly ingested good old MSG. When I stay away from MSG (and a couple of other trigger foods), I no longer have migraines. Period.

I used to have debilitating migraine headaches quite often. MSG was a definite trigger.

I will get a fast heartbeat from restaurant food with MSG in it.

But I have a delicious Greek seasoning that I use for home cooking and it has MSG. It doesn’t bother anyone in my family and everyone likes it on steaks and chicken.

I keep a container of Accent in the cabinet and use it frequently. MSG has never caused me even the slightest amount of trouble whether eating it at home or eating it at restaurants.

Around 25 years ago, I had a number of issues including headaches, increased tinnitus, stinky sweat, bleeding gums, and halitosis (yes, I brush regularly and well) — all of which decreased significantly when I chucked the Ajinomoto and ruthlessly eliminated any processed food that contains MSG.

I am curious how you know you are having an MSG reaction versus a myriad of other things you could have settled on by chance?

Me, I have one big allergic retraction to base metals.   When it happened to me the first time, a metal chain against my skin over night, gave me horrendous water filled blisters.   When I used eye-drops preserved with thimerosal (mercury) my eyes immediately turned red like a herring.

Wait now!   I think I see the problem with my perception. As I read through all of these comments I realized that I am a good ole boy, picky eating, meat and potato, country bumpkin Southerner and never had the chance or desire to eat all of the melting pot foreign cuisine that has MSG in it.

So never mind (in my best Emily Litella voice).

LOL   You are what you eat gets right to the point.   I'm not saying you eat MSG and you are a headache am I?

Youve never really had a bad day at work until youve had to take care of people that have both severe mental health problems and violent digestive system reactions to MSG.

It took years of trial and error. I charted what I ate and eventually found a pattern. I would frequently get clusters of migraines after eating in a particular Chinese restaurant and then leftovers the following day. I started eliminating ingredients until I found the one that likely caused it. I then went to an Asian food store and bought MSG. I would try recipes with and without. I plotted the results and the migraines followed the MSG. I can tolerate small amounts in a meal if not eaten in consecutive days.

Food reactions can be weird. I pass out if I eat scallops and have even a few sips of beer or wine. Even small amounts of XO sauce will bring me down. XO sauce is made with scallop extract. Unfortunately, scallops are one of my favorite seafood.

I never have Headaches. 40 years ago, in high school, I noticed I’d get a headache every time I had a pizza slice at the mall.

Like “maybe I have a brain tumor?” headaches.

A few years later, I had a Vietnamese girlfriend who cooked with MSG (I watched her poor a ton in when prepping dinner) and the meal was great, but bam, headache.

In the last 40 years EVERY headache I have had was directly from eating food with MSG.

If anyone tries to tell me “studies show MSG doesn’t cause headaches”, I’ll ask “who paid for the science?” because it does to me.

If it were harmless then it would not have over dozens of names to hide that it is msg in the food.
I always feel tired after eating any food that has msg.

#10 I was in a restaurant and tried the bread they serve while you wait for the main course. I immediately got a bad headache from the bread. I now do not have any bread at restaurants : )

Well, I believe I have had food from a Chinese restaurant once in my life, something like sweet and sour pork.

Ugh.
