A family member has set up a GoFundMe account to pay for funeral expenses. So far, it has collected a little over $24K. What did middle to lower middle class people do for funeral expenses years ago, before GoFundMe type accounts?

They borrowed money from wherever they could, passed the hat among family members. I would think UPS would have some Life Insurance on that guy.
Life insurance. Also, prepaid funeral insurance. (Father in law had the latter, my parents the former)
Problem is very few young people see the need for either. Some parents purchase for kids, but can get really expensive.
It’s nice of people to want to help out, but limits should be set when the expense of something is calculable. A normal funeral shouldn’t cost $24k, even in CA.
