A 71-year old Iowa City, Iowa, man was fined $855 for shooting and injuring a U.S. Marine with an air rifle in October 2021.
In April, Philip Olson, who claimed he was hunting a squirrel, pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor crime after turning himself in to the police, violating a local ordinance prohibiting the discharge of toy guns and slingshots, according to the Iowa City Press-Citizen.
He accidentally shot 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Gabe Heefner in the head while the Marine was driving by, leaving the Marine severely injured.

71-year-old with air rifle? Unreal. My friends from 66-75 are all past 75. Not a one owns an air rifle, nor would one shoot any weapon near a fellow human unless threatened.

Olson’s air rifle ammo struck Heefner, who was driving on Highway 6. He crashed his car into the median, where police found him. The errant pellet struck Heefner in the temple, leaving him in critical condition. Doctors had to remove a portion of his skull.
Got four air rifles myself - great fun, excellent accuracy - and I’m pushing 77. Killed two copperheads this year but I’m quite careful to make sure that I know what’s behind my target.
It’s dangerous for people near 80 to do any activity.

I thought I’d use a pump BB gun to keep the squirrels off the bird feeder. Somewhere since my old Red Ryder somebody got serious about BB guns. The first squirrel I nailed died.
I don’t want to kill the tree rats I just want to feed the birds so now I keep about a dozen tennis balls near the door to throw at them and once a day I have go collect them. I have learned to throw a pretty reliable strike though.
Stupid story says the Marine was shot with a bullet. Air guns don’t fire bullets. I really feel for the Marine, the 71 y.o. got off easy. This is a legit red flag case. Take all his firearms and air rifles. It’s carless and stupid to point any gun towards a road or home or people.
