The 1960s ideal of love and peace died at Altamont, the free festival conceived by the Rolling Stones as California’s answer to Woodstock, in 1969.
But the man who was more responsible than any other for the destruction of that dream didn’t die himself until yesterday.
Sonny Barger, founder member of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, has always maintained that the blame for the violence and murder at Altamont should be placed at the feet of Mick Jagger and the Stones.
But the truth is Barger, dubbed the Maximum Leader, was an uncompromising thug whose contempt for the law was matched only by his capacity for brutality. At Altamont, he claimed, Jagger and the band wanted ‘a dark scary environment to play Sympathy For The Devil’, and so they hired his infamous gang of outlaws to stand guard around the stage, which was low enough to make them vulnerable.
The result was carnage. The Angels, who were being paid in beer, became aggressively drunk. Brawls broke out and the bikers started assaulting the support acts, knocking out the lead singer of Jefferson Airplane, Marty Balin.

I have a family member that hung out with them - maybe 30 years ago. . He has bot been the same since.
Talk to a few old hardened Viet Nam Vets ....some wont even kill a fly now.....
Barger plotted to kill Jagger because of the way Jagger was talking about the incident. Don’t know if he ever tried

While I was going through a very long divorce, I started dating a woman in town (In retrospect I probably shouldn’t have. But I was “lonely”...).
She had been separated from her husband for years, and her divorce was hung up as well. He lived in a nearby town with his girlfriend, shared visits with the kids, etc.
He was a jerk, but we had a passing acquaintance. He was happy I was keeping his wife out of his hair.
Anyway, at some point he decides he wants to join the Hell’s Angels. Gets into it full blast, colors, sets up a chapter, puts out signs, etc.
So one day it occurs to me: “Hey, I am dating the wife of a Hell’s Angel. Is this really a good idea?”
Things fell apart for various reasons after that.
A few years later her sister called me to tell me the woman had passed away. A few weeks before her divorce was final.
It will be a sad day in meme land when grim reaper finally gets his hands on Keith
Did she die of natural causes
Amazing how many stories begin with “I started dating a woman in town ...”
Thanks for your story! Very entertaining! Glad you survived. :)
“the woman had passed away. A few weeks before her divorce was final.“
If her getting alimony was part of the divorce, you literally dodged a bullet.
The globe will spin off its axis. Who are we kidding, he’s never going to kick it. Too many coconut trees to fall out of between now and the General Judgment.
I just recall watching the concert many years ago (like 35 -40 years ago) and the HA’s were forcing everyone watching to sit down. Just acted like tyrants.
There is a post from 2021 that says the gun incident happened when Richards tried to get them to stop hitting people with pool cues. Barger said shut up and play your guitar

Tales from the Crypt
I can understand that.
Like any of us will live long enough to see that happen...
She had a substance issue she struggled with. She was sober when we started dating, but fell off the wagon. In and out of detox and rehab for about a year before we split.
>>Barger was jailed again in 1988 for conspiring to blow up the clubhouse of a rival gang in Louisville, Kentucky.
Probably The Outlaws. We passed a group of 4 on I-75N in GA just north of Atlanta last year. First time in a long time I had seen 1%ers. We stopped at the new Buc-ee’s in Calhoun, and a few minutes later they were inside walking around shopping with bright red hand baskets like the rest of us.
In college I lived on St. Mark’s Place, a couple blocks up from Hell’s Angels NYC HQ. There’s was probably the safest street in town. Was kind of surreal, though, seeing them in line at the ice cream stand, etc.
There’s s/b theirs
