In a news release, the police said its traffic safety division joined forces with its aviation unit for a speed control operation on Maryland Route 10, a 7-mile expressway that runs from Pasadena to near Glen Burnie.

From the sky, the aviation unit managed to observe multiple speeders going over 100 mph, including a Ford Mustang going 169 mph, police said.

You are correct. But without the law there would be no corrective action - ticket, loss of license, jailtime, etc... Laws are not just written to be preventative but also punitive.

Absolutely, but the argument that libertarian views are not apt are specious. No speed limits would result in more efficient use of roads. No laws against punitive action against left lane hogs and the allowance to put a bullet in the head of someone in the left lane for any reason other than passing would, very quickly, reduce left lane hogs.

Frankly I feel left lane hogs are the greatest threat to human civilization today.

As do I, but Hey Little Cobra was The Ripcords, not the Beach Boys. Little Deuce Coupe was Beach Boys.

What were the tires rated for?

This was the exact question I asked myself doing 141 in a used turbo Porsche I had just bought back in '92. I chickened out even though I had rpms and road to spare.

In both of the events, the drivers were moving at a very good clip and swerved slightly to avoid other traffic.

How fast? I do not know.

About 5 years ago, I was on Hwy. 412 going thru OK panhandle early on Sunday morning.
A Ford GT 40 passed me at about 150 mph. My estimate using my speed and a reference point down the road . You would cover about 215 feet per second at that speed. Old super bike racer trick.
Anyway right after the Ford came a OHP charger doing every bit of that, and then some.
I later told a buddy of mine that is a retired Trooper about it.
Ron said he had heard rumors at Trooper gathering about OHP had got a Hell Cat.
They had to outfit the car locally because Dodge would not sell the car as a pursuit option.

Actually it’s on a 2-lane highway south of Helena, MT.

The normal speed limit is 70 MPH but the school zone speed limit is 55 MPH.

I always get a kick out of seeing the ‘School Zone 55 MPH’ signs.

It’s even odder that the school is not visible as it is behind a building that says: BAR on it...

Agreed. They cause accidents as they slow traffic flow and are not aware of what is going on around them.

I do not deny libertarians their common sense arguments. I just am wary of their absolutism.

I don’t know the details of this particular speeding incident. My opinion is that as long as the road was deserted (but only in that case), the driver wasn’t placing anyone else at risk. It’s up to him to balance the risk to himself, his car, and his driving record against the benefit of whatever thrill he got from driving that fast.

I looked at the road on Google Earth. The most likely place on Route 10 for this stunt is a stretch of about 1/2 mile with 4 lanes in the same direction and no entrances or cross streets. The posted speed limit is 55.

What speed would have been low enough for you not to call for the murder of the Mustang driver, given that nobody was in fact injured? 120? 100? 60?

Wasn’t there a commercial flight a couple a couple of years ago that made it from NY to Heathrow in under 5 hours with huge tailwinds?

It was 640 knots ground speed. About 740 mph. 465 Knots true Air Speed. KIAS was obviously less.

Around here, there was an idiot in a modded Mustang who was just out having fun, and rear-ended another vehicle killing a little girl and putting her grandmother in a wheel chair for the rest of her life. It was the day before Thanksgiving on a fairly heavily trafficked 4-lane road. I don’t remember how fast they said he was going.

He spent several years in jail, which was less than what he deserved.

> I confess. I did 165 in a De Tomaso Pantera in 1970.

The cruise control on my ‘89 Porsche 928S4 would remember a few presets for ya. I had the top 3 set at 135, 165, and 185. The only way to set the cruise to a particular speed was to drive at that speed, heheh.

Some days I could drive across the San Mateo bridge westbound and if the winds were right I could pass airliners on approach to SFO.

I recall there were enough Panteras in Foster City to have its own little Pantera club. They would park at the Starbucks on Hillsdale and have a little impressive showing before Sunday drive. Such sweet growling rumbling beasts…

My Porsche was at not the fastest car around by a long shot.

Yep regarding your description of road hugging by a legitimate high performance car.

Somewhere towards 90ish mph, the aerodynamic design of the body and the suspension design kick in strong. You can feel the vehicle squat down and glue to the road.

Sleeper American high performance sedan design…. 2001-2005 Lincoln LS with 4L V8 and sport suspension. Body and interior by Lincoln. Engine, drivetrain and suspension by Jaguar. Its sibling, Jag S-Type 4.0 was a touch hotter by being a couple of hundred pounds lighter and the engine tuned a little hotter.

Damn shame Ford sold Jag and lost access to Jag magic. LS’s market goals were over achieved by greatly out selling BMW 3 and 5 series combined with a Lincoln level of luxury to boot.

A few years ago I was the only vehicle in sight on an interstate at 3 am. I was doing 20 over when several crotch rockets blew past me at 120 or more.

Given that they were about alone on the road, I had no problem with it.
