Rita Moreno spoke out this Friday about the botched illicit abortion she had during her romance with Marlon Brando, years before Roe v. Wade.
Her remarks came the day the US Supreme Court overturned Roe, the landmark 1973 ruling that guaranteed abortion rights throughout the country.
The 90-year-old told Variety she had her pregnancy terminated by 'a real doctor - Marlon paid him $500 - as opposed to something in a back alley.'
Rita and Marlon met in 1954 and began a tempestuous eight-year affair that was scarred by his womanizing and eventually drove her to attempt suicide.
During the time that he was with Rita, Marlon married his first two wives and produced children with both of them.
Rita wrote in her memoirs that when she herself became pregnant: 'To my shock and horror, Marlon immediately arranged for an abortion.'
She claimed that Marlon would not even pick her up after the illicit procedure himself, enlisting one of his friends for the task instead.
n her new Variety interview, she remembered that 'Marlon found a doctor through some friends' to perform the abortion.
'Marlon took me to the hospital. I had what they told me was a 'disturbed pregnancy.' The doctor didn't do anything really, except make me bleed. In other words, he didn't do it right,' she shared. 'I didn't know it then, but I could have died. What a mess. What a dreadful mess.'
In her memoirs she laid out the medical problem in further detail, explaining that as a consequence of the bungled procedure she still had a dead fetus in her body and had to dash to the hospital to have it excised.

Sad you are acting this way. Woman back then did not have many options like today. The only thing they had was condoms you idiots.
If a woman got pregnant that was it. And if you were unmarried you were branded big time.
The shame of having a child out of wedlock would have killed her supporting herself.
And there were no blood tests to affirm Brando was the father. She wold have had a heck of a time trying to prove he was and the press would have made her look nuts.
I find peoples lack of understanding of the times very disturbing.

Do any of you really know what a person is going through when they become pregnant back in those days?
My oldest sister got pregnant by a married man who raped her back in the early 1970’s. My other sister and I never even knew she was pregnant. It ruined her life. She had the baby and gave it up for adoption and my family kept it quiet for over 35 years after the fact. They were ashamed she got pregnant. The rapist was never arrested as there was no police force in the little town we lived in.
Back in those days small towns only had people who volunteered to be a police officer believe it or not. And at the time I do not think there was one when this happened.
My sister was never right after she went through that. But I never understood what was wrong with her until 35 years later.
Rita Moreno openly admits to committing murder as abortion was murder at that time. There's no statute of limitation on murder and she needs to be charged.
