The python was caught at the Picayune Strand State Forest just outside of Naples...... python so large that it took three men to carry it out of the Everglades.
Florida authorities are unsure about the number of pythons living in the state, but the going estimate is at least 30,000 to 300,000.....are found all over the place, neighborhoods and suburbs,' said Main.
Researchers at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida captured this massive female python that turned out to weigh 215 pounds and measure 17.7 feet long – deeming it the largest python ever recorded in Florida—or anywhere outside its native range. 'Researchers said people would be alarmed to know how widespread they are.'
The python had hoof cores and bits of fur in her digestive tract, which researchers say indicates her last meal was an adult white-tailed deer.

The Burmese Python is now well established in southern Florida and spreading northward. .....The factors likely to limit this spread are unknown, but presumably include climate or are correlated with climate.

They shouldn’t have killed her but let her loose in the Capitol building in DC. It is a natural habitat for all kinds of snakes.

Apparently only gators can get and eat these pythons....

Think also about the Hurricanes hitting and transferring these pythons to other areas and even states!

I lived in Northern Florida for about a year - saw Gators running free at Sawgrass Golf Club and could hardly believe it!

These idiots who buy pythons for pets and then abandon them into the wild (in countries that aren't supposed to have pythons) just need to go out and catch a good ol'-fashioned chicken snake (Pantherophis spiloides). Not only is it the best snake in the world (bar none!), it's simply one of the greatest pets there is! And they're free.
To: caww
Wow, according to that map my neck of California is a suitable habitat for these snakes.

I had a Burmese python for about a year. It started at 18 inches in length. A year later, it was 5 ft. My wife likes snakes. We have about 10 right now. The Burmese latched onto her hand when she dangled a rat by the tail into the terrarium. I had to lift the terrarium onto the nearby waterbed, then lift the snake out of the terrarium, then carefully manipulate the head forward to unhook the teeth from my wife's hand. A U shaped arc of punctures remained.
I decided the Burmese was probably going to be a hazard to the kids, so we found a childless couple that loves Burmese pythons for a new home.
Our biggest today is a ball python. The corn snake, rosy boas, sand boas and garter snakes aren't a hazard.

"Unfortunately the concern is these snakes are eating the native animals etc. White tailed deer are now at just 200. There are plenty - millions- of whitetail deer in America, all they have to do is catch them and ship them down to Florida. Here in Wyoming whitetail deer are as plentiful as cockroaches in Florida.
