The class of 2050 will be remembering a different sort of good old days, imo. Such as: Remember when we weren't hungry all the time? Those days were sweet.
This is the kind of typical neighborhood drama which now has an outlet in social media.
I can imagine a story like this 15-30 years ago and it would only have been a local story. Now its amplified by all the power of the internet for personal enrichment.
I tried to start a little campfire in the woods in back of our house. It got away from me. I ran in the house, walked around for a second, looked out the back window and said “Ma, there’s a fire”. She walked up and jammed her hands in my coat pockets and pulled out matches. Busted. Then she called the fire dept.
And rock fights. Rock fights.
I was on a scholarship from the city...they were living the good life in a very wealthy town near the school.
And don't forget the pen knives we all carried to play mumbly peg?? That was grammar school.
LOL. I went to a theater thing a few years back called “Defending the Caveman”, and they had a short video in the intro to the show...it shows a BBQ grill, and the wife has big oven mitts, tongs, and is gingerly stacking the individual briquets in a pyramid.
In speeded up video mode, the guy rushes into the scene, pushes her out of the way, grabs the entire bag of charcoal, holds it upside down and dumps the whole bag of charcoal into the grill, then he grabs a thing of lighter fluid, and proceeds to hold it above his head, squeezing strenuously with both hands to saturate the entire thing with enough lighter fluid to drown the briquettes, then takes a match and throws it on, where the video cuts to a nuclear explosion at Bikini Atoll!
It captured so perfectly the guy approach to fire!
Gotta make a note to myself about that.

Did you know that you can take a strike anywhere match, place it in the barrel of an empty BB gun, pump the gun up and fire at a hard target. The match will explode on impact just like a firecracker.

to the bottom of a frisbee, and then... never mind...

The Purdue engineering department had an annual picnic that turned into a contest of how quickly the could light the grill. The final year involved a beaker of liquid oxygen on a long stick poured over the charcoal and a lit cigarette. I don’t think they found the grill.
Yeah, but I think things like this are more likely when you just tell a boy “never play with matches” versus taking them camping and teaching them how to actually handle fire safely.
They’re going to mess with it even if you tell them not to, might as well teach them to mess with it in a safer way.

That said, I have met numerous people with serious life-long injuries from childhood--drugs, alcohol, smoking, dirt bikes, skateboards, and so forth. Stupid kids combined with bad parents.
And for the lying mom and her kid lighting a ball on fire, where was dad? Does the kid even have a dad around in his life?
If you have never seen it, this is interesting to watch as a cultural touchstone from the Seventies, and serves as a reminder to see just how much things have changed in so many ways. They could never make this today.
Navy Training Film: "The Man From LOX"
There was a whole generation of sailors who were shown this film as a part of mandatory training. We all loved it, we laughed, we snickered, we joked, all 18, all indestructible.
We all loved it and guffawed when the guy wouldn't shirk his duties and go with the Bikini Girl...and when "The Safety Officer was going to have our ass" we all wished that we had a Safety Officer like that.
But at the very end, nobody laughed at that. And we all remembered. Don't mess around with LOX. A very effective training film for young men.
I agree 100%. But there is something in all of us where the devil takes control and we do stupid things. Some of us grow out of it...and some never do.
Mom may have been misled by kid. This is horrible no matter what.
