What Is the Second Amendment for, Exactly?
Jacobin ^ | 6/21/2020 | CHRISTOPHER R. MARTIN

The Second Amendment is killing us so the gun industry can rake in massive profits — we can’t keep interpreting it as an absolute right for every single citizen to own a gun.

In the week following the May 24 massacre in Uvalde, Texas, the Sioux City Bandits, a professional indoor football team from western Iowa, had planned a giveaway of an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle as a “Military Night” promotion, as they had done a year earlier. After widespread criticism, the Sioux City Journal reported that the team’s Missouri-based owner, J.R. Bond, said canceling or postponing the giveaway “didn’t even approach my radar screen.” Bond added that “some people’s ‘obsession with a piece of metal is overblown’ and that the negative comments came from East Coast residents who are ‘driving electric cars and eating wheat grass.’”

For the record: One of the main critics was the local co-owner of the State Steel Supply Company in Sioux City, who said he would end his sponsorship of the Bandits because “this promotion is beyond tone deaf and is incredibly insensitive to current affairs.” (Also, for the record: You can buy both wheat grass and electric cars in Sioux City.)

J.R. Bond was right about one thing — that some people’s “obsession with a piece of metal is overblown.” In fact, if lots of people did not have overblown obsessions with guns, he wouldn’t have been using one as a promotion, and his team would likely be named something other than “the Bandits.”

The massacre in Uvalde was horrific. An eighteen-year-old man wielding an AR-15 style semiautomatic rifle on May 24 murdered twenty-one people (nineteen of them children) and wounded seventeen others. We have heard this kind of gut-punching news too many times before, and each time millions hope this time will be the event that finally changes the country’s toxic relationship with guns. When will Congress do something, anything to stop the unrelenting deaths by firearms?

Being a gun fan isn’t the easiest thing. It’s always walking on eggshells about which rights the government will you have.

The Democrats are murderers. They wouldn’t let the police go in and save the students. They needed a high body count so they could try to grab legal gun owners guns. Media does what they are commanded to do.

> The 2nd Amendment is to stop groups like Jacobins <

Very well said! As you noted, the Jacobins helped initiate the French Revolution. But it’s more than just that. They are also largely responsible for the ‘Reign of Terror’ that followed. The Jacobins loved the guillotine, and used it at every opportunity.

So it’s very telling that an organization would name itself after those bloody murderers.

“...we can’t keep interpreting it as an absolute right for every single citizen to own a gun.”

it’s not a matter of interpreting it. That’s what it means. The right to self defense is natural and pre-dates government itself. The purpose/intent of the 2A is for an armed populace to defend itself AGAINST GOVERNMENT.

The problem is that 99% of Americans cannot tell you what came before the 2nd amendment and explain natural and inalienable rights, etc. They think this was new with the 2nd amendment. No one is taught civics and history.

I always like to say that it would take criminals in the United States and Canada (along with the psycho perps of mass shooting tragedies) hundreds of centuries to equal the number murdered by just four governments (Stalin’s USSR, Hitler’s Nazi Germany, Mao’s Red China, and Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge) in just one.

Everyone should stop “bare facing” the Second Amnedment and look at the beginning and stop ignoring the command phrase.

“Congress shall make no Law”.

To consider or introduce such a change (Amendment or regulation) is a violation of their oath (fiduciary malfeasance) and a violation of the Constitution, no matter how high-falutin’ their rhetoric.
It is treasonous to the Constitution as God (”Our Creator”) gave us these rights (self-determination) simply because of our existence.

I think we should call on the government to disarm itself because THEY are often the ones not using weapons responsibly. . . .

Historians estimate that 6,800 Americans were killed in combat in the Revolutionary War, less than one-sixth of the 45,222 that died from gun-related injuries in the US in the single year of 2020.

Perhaps the most asinine comparison ever made.

The US Constitution was written so a normal graduate of secondary education can understand it and apply it.

Then lawyers got ahold of it and TV came along and, well, you know...

Works for me. The language of the Second Amendment is plain enough. "....the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

The first part explains the reason for this right. "A well regulated Militia, being necessary for the security of a free State," applies to those states that wish to remain free, and the organization of a militia, be it at the state, local or other level, as a voluntary organization and a lawfully constituted force. This may even include a neighborhood watch, and of course, the "castle doctrine" is included in this category.

"Get off my lawn!" should be warning enough.

"we can’t keep interpreting it as an absolute right for every single citizen to own a gun."

Has this guy bothered to read the FF's diaries, letters, personal correspondence, publications, etc. that clearly state it IS an absolute right of self protection. Granted, the FF's could have worded it better, but they were writing at a time when everyone understood their intent.

Sheesh. All any of these gun-grabbers need do is Google: Founding Fathers + 2nd Amendment + Quotes. I had a list of the quotes, but can't find them. There is NO ambiguity in those quotes.

“Congress shall make no Law”.

That's the opening phrase of the FIRST Amendment.
