n a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, officials unveiled the Type 003 warship. The Fujian — which, according to officials cited in state media, would not be battle-ready for five years — is an important milestone in Beijing’s ambitions to develop a “blue water” navy, capable of projecting power far beyond its shores.
The carrier has been the focus of intense interest among military observers and rival nations tracking the development of China’s navy. China’s first two carriers include a retrofit of an old Soviet model, the Liaoning, bought from Ukraine in 1998, and the Shandong, which was built in China but based on the Liaoning model and commissioned in 2019.
It is the first Chinese carrier to be equipped with an electromagnetic catapult for launching aircraft, including those with a heavier payload, faster and more efficiently. The technology leapfrogs the “ski jump” configuration for launching jets via a ramp at the end of a runway used on China’s other two carriers.

Because, by that time Melbourne was a hulk destined for scrapping, not a functioning ship.
Temporary environmental control tents. Probably for construction requirements, flight deck covering for example.
From the title and through the tone of the article, the WaPoo sure seems to be cheerleading the advances by the PLAN.
Wonder why they are so very proud of another military but despise the US military?
Strange, that.
In other words war with China? I doubt Trump would agree with that.
And then what happens? You want a shooting war with the world's third largest nuclear power? That seems... uh, reckless.
China is still providing targets, I see.
Seals approach from the sea at night, place the charges on some major hull seams, and crack open the seams...carrier sinks in the middle of sea trial stress testing, where there is always that risk
Awww, Sorry for your loss, CCP, maybe it was bad welding or something?
So the Admiral Kuznetsov won’t be the biggest POS afloat anymore?
“Shaped charges on hull”
Could easily result in a DF-21 variant taking out a USN carrier.
“So the Admiral Kuznetsov won’t be the biggest POS afloat anymore?”
Who says it is afloat?
The primary purpose of Chinese aircraft carriers is to intimidate smaller foes who don’t have the means to attack them back.
And then what happens? The Chinese aren’t known for being stupid. The US sinks their largest, most modern surface combatant in an unprovoked act of war, likely killing a few hundred of their sailors, and what do you think they do? Torpedo two of our carriers? Fire ballistic missiles at Guam or Okinawa or Yokosuka? Have you thought this through?
People made the same jokes about the Japanese Navy and flight crews. That is before 1941.
China is full of -very- smart people, they have fully penetrated our society and every aspect of our military. Hell, our own JCS Chief said he promised he would warn them if we ever intended on attacking. At present their manufacturing blows ours out of the water.
Their sailors are dead serious and not infected with drag queens and homos. And their ships are not conned by women that refuse to peak to each other.
When’s the last time a Chinese warship couldn’t avoid collision with a container ship?
I would laugh a little less.
A lot can happen in 5 years
USS Frank E Evans DD 754 was cut in half by the HMAS Melbourne
You are right; it’s fun to mock them, but no one has EVER won a war, nor a battle, by underestimating their enemy.
Counterfeit F-35s on the Deck ? or did Biden make deal for his 10%
The Japs are watching all of this, inscrutably.
'Twas only a scratch...
