A man who was trying to steal gas from a parked up box truck accidentally set himself ablaze in the process as fuel prices continue to soar.
The shocking incident was all caught on surveillance camera footage as the man could be seen attempting to siphon fuel from the tank of a vehicle next to which he had parked his own white pickup in Salt Lake City.
Authorities believe the man was using a drill in order to access the gas tank during which a spark ignited the flammable liquid.
Static electricity, or sparks caused by the friction from the drill bit against the gas tank are most likely to blame for the spontaneous combustion of the gas.
The truck was parked outside Summit Fire and Protection and had already had its catalytic converter stolen when this second thief came to steal the gas in broad daylight.
'Some people try to take the easy way out of everything,' said Branch Manager Travis Mills, who believes current $5-a-gallon gas prices were behind the theft.
'The guy tried to siphon gas out of it and he wasn't getting the siphon to work, so he decided to drill the gas tank, and that's when he caught on fire,' Mills said.

We had locking gas caps, too.
And also, the temperature recommendations for a while were setting your house to 55 degrees.
We turned our thermostat down, but not to 55, yet I worked with a guy who made his wife do that with two little kids at home, one of them sick with the flu. They guy was a piece of work anyways, but it was then that I lost any respect I had remaining for him.
He could go to work all day and be nice and warm, and demanded his wife and kids stay at home and freeze in their own home. Fifty-five is stinking cold for indoors.
Why does it feel like I’m living the seventies all over again, only this time on steroids?
Car-ma...........................
At least there were no supply issue shortages. Is started my first job out of college in 78. Soon after Jimmy Carter was elected and it all went to hell in a hand basket.
We are not the same county as then. The demographics is less Caucasian and more minority. The 13%rs will be the problem. Just look at any city over 150,000.
I’m surprised most dont know how to siphon gas. Even movies and TV portray it incorrectly. A job I had in high school, we never carried tanks. We just filled our mowers by siphoning from the big truck we used to haul everything around. We just had a cut rubber hose.
Not once did I ever get gas in my mouth, or even taste it.
That’s a shame.
This winter, 62 will be the new 72 degrees.
I suspect we are about to see lots of this type of gas theft.
Something to ponder: As things get more expensive and scare in fuels, will we see a backlash against those with large vehicles? Not just social shaming, either. I wouldn’t be surprised to see those who have large SUVs and trucks, even single occupant commuters being publicly labeled as unpatriotic wasters.
“Static electricity, or sparks caused by the friction from the drill bit against the gas tank are most likely to blame for the spontaneous combustion of the gas”
There’s a simple way to avoid all that....but I’m sure as he not gonna say how.
SMH.....what a dumbass.
God bless those of us who remember the rationing, siphoning, locking caps, etc.
Most cars for the past three decades have had baffles in the fuel filler neck, or a mechanism to prevent spills in a rollover, that prevent siphoning these days. The preferred method is drilling the tank, which is what this moron did.
The return of the Jimmy Carter locking gas cap.
Speaking of which, I wonder if someone could make a novelty sticker of Joe Biden that would fit on a gas cap?
Video showed the manger saying people are desperate….yes but everyone is hurting more now that that make under 100k a year.
Maybe he meant he was desperate For meth? Bling?
That drill motor, brushes and all, makes sparks too.
I put that at the top of the blame list.
Well, the top of the list is the nut behind the drill.
Funny. I’ve had times in my life where I was in desperate financial condition and yet I never considered thievery.
Of course the Press (made up of criminals) is going to always find excuses for criminals.
So, when’s Biden gonna want us back to 55 mph?
Yeah, that’ll help come November 😃
