An Alabama teen has been accepted to more than 15 universities, including Harvard and Johns Hopkins, and has been awarded more than $2 million in scholarship offers.

Rotimi Kukoyi, a high school senior and the first Black National Merit Scholar at his school, is from Hoover, Alabama. He told ABC News he was inspired to apply to a number of places after appearing on the "Jeopardy!" Teen Tournament as a freshman in 2018, and meeting high achieving students from across the country.

Hoover high school has one of the best football 🏈 programs in the state of Alabama. The convention center in Hoover, Ala. serves as host of the Southeastern Conference football pre-season get together each year. Generally, Hoover is a nice up scale place to live. The kid’s parents choose wisely.

“Hopefully he wont be poisoned by a college education.”

My sister teaches math to black kids in Baltimore. She occasionally gets a black immigrant family from Africa and their kids are the smartest and very hard working. Their parents are deathly afraid that their kids will start acting like American black kids.

Some of the nurses I worked with were black and from African nations. They spoke excellent English, didn’t behave entitled, were not afraid to be questioned, or ask questions, learned quickly, and accurately expressed their opinions. Very good experience with them.

I was in the hospital for a week last year, and every several hours at night a nurse would come by, wake me up and take my blood pressure, temperature, and check my IVs. Many were from Ghana and Nigeria, and I always enjoyed spending a little time talking with them. They had all gotten their education here, and were continuing to advance themselves. It made me proud of our country that no matter where a person comes from, if they are willing to work, they can pull themselves up.

In the mid 70’s boat people from South Vietnam arrived in my hometown of Fargo, ND. Few of them had any English speaking skills at all. But as you pointed out like the African immigrants, a tremendous work ethic. Within 20 years the children were graduating from high school at the top of their classes or very nearly the top.

One IVY League School tried to count the children of African immigrants as part of the diversity inclusion quotas. However, the American black student leaders insisted that only American blacks from bad neighborhoods and single parents be part of those quotas.

Why apply to 15 schools when you are almost certain to get into your #1 or #2 pick on a full scholarship?

Did you ace the ACT?

I’m actually mostly for that.

That is If he didn’t get advantages by affirmative action like government programs and lessened requirements based on race or socio-economic considerations. Or being an immigrant for that matter.

It’s for bragging rights— particularly for the parents. We had a guy in our local high school who got accepted to the entire Ivy League plus MIT, Stanford and maybe a couple others. Mom paid for a page in the yearbook to show off all the acceptance letters. Our community is proud of that kid, but I feel terrible for the many students who were denied admission or waitlisted while this guy was collecting admission letters.
(Btw he went to MIT. We see him now on a Battlebots robotics team.)

I graduated a year early with honors, did my first (I have 3) bachelor’s degree in two years after clepping out of my first year of college. I was phi kappa phi in college. Have several advanced degrees with honors.

Held offices in National Beta, National Honor, Health Careers, Student government, National Science Foundation finalist, on varsity volleyball and track with outstanding SAT score. But no, I didn’t get the political apointments ... Sorry to disappoint...Only a very old retired white woman here....who has been told at least twice in my life that I could not be hired because I wasn’t black.

Immigrants from Africa don’t much care for “African Americans”.

—”who has been told at least twice in my life that I could not be hired because I wasn’t black.”

All too common in today’s environment.

That said; I think this kid is the real deal.

Most likely his parents came from Nigeria.
My son the school teacher says most are from intact Christian families and are high achievers, they work hard. Their graduation rates and degrees acquired are well above the US white rate.

I have worked with a few Nigerians, some for years, all exemplary.

A memorable example was the woman who cared for my very elderly father-in-law; bone cancer to the end.
The first time we met, I thought this will be interesting!
Dressed to the nines for a fancy Nigerian wedding? Bright vibrant colors a hat/ head cover and a sash.

My father-in-law, a former US Navy ships doctor, tended to be a bit formal and was very unhappy with his prognosis.

She was a bright spot in his final days, they talked a lot, prayed together, and she cried when he passed.

Many more like the Nigerians I have known and they will be taking over.
My son says they are moving up in the academic world, not all in African studies, the hard sciences.

Unfortunately, we look and say, oh he’s there because...(never spoken or written), just nod.
Mostly because political BS has nudged our thinking.
The best and brightest thing is long gone if it ever was.

And we all lose.
