Explanation: What are those unusual streaks? Some images of planet Earth show clear bright streaks that follow the paths of ships. Known as ship tracks, these low and narrow bands are caused by the ship's engine exhaust. Water vapor condenses around small bits of exhaust known as aerosols, which soon grow into floating water drops that efficiently reflect sunlight. Ship tracks were first discovered in 1965 in Earth images taken by NASA's TIROS satellites. Multiple ship tracks are visible across the featured image that was captured in 2009 over the Pacific Ocean by the MODIS instrument on NASA's Terra satellite. Inspired by ship-tracks, some scientists have suggested deploying a network of floating buoys in the worlds' oceans that spray salt-aerosol containing sea-water into the air so that, with the help of the wind, streams of sunlight-reflecting clouds would also form. Why do this? These human-made clouds could reflect so much sunlight they might help fight global warming.

I knew it. Reverse contrails!
This is fairly common in the relatively stable subtropical high pressure areas.
It is a similar phenomena to contrails.
The ship exhaust provides the condensation nuclei.
I think that explanation is a crock. The writer seems to have misunderstood something. The exhast of steam powered ships comes out of their exhaust stacks high above the water. Nuclear powered ones have no exhaust, per se. I believe what those trails in the water are showing are the trails of aerated water made by the ships’ screws churning the water, propelling the vessel on its way.
Look more like contrails to me. Can’t tell if they are at an elevation of a few hundred feet or several miles.
“These human-made clouds could reflect so much sunlight they might help fight global warming.”
Great plan. Our April and May here in the Inland Northwest were about NINE degrees below normal in April and May. Spring is very late arriving here, too. Nothing but wet and cold.
At least this crackpot scheme would be reversible if they shut off the mid-ocean seawater aerosol generators.
“Steam powered ships”???
Virtually all diesel other than a few gas turbine and nuke.
Fine! You’re obscuring my point with facts that while perhaps true, don’t change my point. Which is that I do NOT believe those trails in the water were made by the exhaust of the ship’s source of power. They were made by the propellars that push the vessel through the water.
