View comments A mother has told of her mid-air terror after her teenage daughter blacked out and suffered an allergic reaction at 30,000 feet on a British Airways when a passenger opened a packet of peanuts on board.
Joanna Jones, 39, was flying to London from Antigua when her 14-year-old daughter Poppy needed oxygen and two EpiPen shots during the nightmare eight-hour flight after suffering a severe reaction to the nuts.
As Poppy's condition worsened, a quick-thinking nurse on board dashed to help - while the captain considered making an emergency landing.
Eventually the pilot landed the plane safely at Gatwick and Poppy was rushed to hospital.
Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, Joanna said: ’It was a nightmare for all of us and I really thought she might die.

This analogy would hold up if you could demonstrate that Trump paid to create the virus in that lab in Wuhan, but I doubt anyone can claim that Trump had any knowledge of this.
What Carter did was blindingly stupid (corrupt?) at the time and the subsequent effects of it are indeed his fault.
Had he not been there, none of that would have happened. Do you think Ford would have been so stupid as to let Iran be overthrown?
And because Trump supported (and still supports) vaccines, your logic demands that Trump be directly responsible for the hundreds of thousands of vaccine related deaths here in the US alone.
Now here you have a better argument, and I wish Trump would drop the "vaccine" nonsense.
Regarding Carter and the Shah, I have read quite a lot of information claiming that Carter tried to get the Shah to allow Carter's buddies to manage Iran's oil resources which the Shah refused to do. It is alleged that Carter deliberately undermined the Shah's control of his own country (which he did. Don't you remember what Carter did?) in order to get him out of power so that someone more receptive might take his place.
Carter called for the Shah to stop using his secret police to harass dissidents. Carter called for the Shah to allow the Ayatollah Khomeini to return from exile in Paris. Carter urged the Shah not to crack down on the dissidents fomenting a revolution, and when the revolution finally broke, Carter ordered all US assets to stand down and not intervene, even though they were blatantly murdering the officers and other people.
what would you do if someone wearing a burqa sat next to you on an airplane?...
I believe I have clearly demonstrated that to reasonable people. If you do not now think Carter was worse than LBJ, I don't think I have any further argument that will persuade you, and we will just have to see this differently.
Now you know nothing of Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower and their involvement leading up to the Vietnam war.
Well yes I do, but if we are talking about the first sending of US forces to Vietnam, that would be Kennedy.
Truman caused the whole thing by refusing to take Ho Chi Minh's requests for independence seriously and by supporting France, he made conflict in Vietnam inevitable.
Eisenhower had his fingers on everything, not just Vietnam. He's the guy under who's government the CIA installed the Shah as the ruler of Iran. (Which was a good thing. The other guy was a communist.)
Yes, Eisenhower's CIA was mucking about in Vietnam, and Eisenhower even offered Nukes to the French to help them win in Vietnam, but they were offended by the offer and vowed to make their own nukes, which they did.
Not sure what part of this history you think i'm ignorant about, but I am always willing to learn more. Tell me what you consider to be the important parts of Truman and Eisenhower's role in Vietnam.
Was thinking the same.
Thank you
my point is we don’t know if the mom waited to deal with it, or actually made plans in advance.
The airline should be able to confirm that they would be able to make that happen for her-not just try if it is life or death.
Bottom line she decided to fly with her teen.
You seem to be stuck on the jerk eating nuts. He’s a jerk but thats not a crime yet.
Some freepers would say "several thousand posts ago", but I call it like I see it, even if it aggravates some people.
Yup.
They don't have the right to put their child's life at risk by thinking they can simply tell people to keep all peanuts away. That is irrational.
A parent wanting to actual protect their child will not risk a stranger refusing to comply. They will make certain their child is protected regardless of what a stranger does.
They should have either refused to go on airplanes where there is a chance she could be exposed, or they should provide her with an N-95 mask that can filter out any threat to her life.
It’s not an infringement of his rights to ask him to not eat or to have another snack.
This has not a d@mn thing to do with the peanut eater. If it wasn't him, it could have been peanuts on the floor, on the chair, in the tray in front of her seat, or smeared on people's clothes.
The focus here should be on parents who *KNOW* they have a child at risk, and who *DID NOT* take appropriate precautions to protect her.
Making it about the peanut guy is dodging the issue. Mommy should have bought her an air filtering system that would protect her, or mommy should have kept her off the d@mn airplane.
Yes, but sometimes that's funny. :)
Good riddance.
Yes, this is true. For people with severe peanut allergies, nearly being in proximity to them can cause anaphylaxis and death.
Natural right to liberty, pal. No natural right to be allergen-free. No right not to die of natural causes either. Having said that the jet is private property so there is a civil issue here somewhere.
Or little Poppy could cease and desist from flying. Life is a risk and then you die.
Well thank you. I wanted to get into the opposition the medical community had to the germ theory of disease, antiseptics and other issues, but I couldn't remember all the details as well as I would have liked.
The story about Pettenkofer was a hoot. Drinking Cholera to prove germs won't make you sick? Priceless!
I see in medical history the same thing I see in the history of science, and indeed, the history of mankind.
Egos get in the way of change. People defend the existing system until it is no longer defensible, then they change.
This is not to say all change is good, Lord knows a lot of changes we have seen are terrible, but change that improves things are indeed "progress."
Your reasoning is mistaken. The allergy exists - the right to protection from others for your allergy does NOT. That’s the issue.
um, why did these things never happen years ago when they actually served nuts to passengers?
You’re a big-talking psychopath. You wouldn’t beat anyone to death on the plane over peanuts for the simple reason that the air marshal on board would execute you if you tried. Eating peanuts isn’t a crime. Your allergy, your problem. I dare you to try to “beat someone to death” on an airliner, tough guy.
No dice. She ate some peanuts herself.
I think you as a hysterical female should leave. Stop all this “life-saving medical” stuff. drama. You seem to think along the lines of a Covid extremist. Not every life can be saved. Not everyone can live. This girl won’t make 30. Darwinian action - it’s not the peanuts or the guy eating peanuts. It’s her own immune system that’s to blame.
500!
