I Rented An Electric Car For A Four-Day Road Trip. I Spent More Time Charging It Than I Did Sleeping.

I thought it would be fun.

That’s what I told my friend Mack when I asked her to drive with me from New Orleans to Chicago and back in an electric car.

I’d made long road trips before, surviving popped tires, blown headlights and shredded wheel-well liners in my 2008 Volkswagen Jetta. I figured driving the brand-new Kia EV6 I’d rented would be a piece of cake.

If, that is, the public-charging infrastructure cooperated. We wouldn’t be the first to test it. Sales of pure and hybrid plug-ins doubled in the U.S. last year to 656,866—over 4% of the total market, according to database EV-volumes. More than half of car buyers say they want their next car to be an EV, according to recent Ernst & Young Global Ltd. data.

By the Numbers

Our reporter’s four-day, three-night EV road trip included many charging stops, little sleep—and less junk food than you might expect

Miles driven: 2,013

Number of charges: 14

Total charging cost: $175

Hours spent waiting to charge:18

Hours of sleep:16

Calories of junk food consumed (estimated): 1,465

Giant chicken statues passed: 1

Oh—and we aimed to make the 2,000-mile trip in just under four days so Mack could make her Thursday-afternoon shift as a restaurant server.

Less money, more time

Given our battery range of up to 310 miles, I plotted a meticulous route, splitting our days into four chunks of roughly 7½-hours each. We’d need to charge once or twice each day and plug in near our hotel overnight.

The PlugShare app—a user-generated map of public chargers—showed thousands of charging options between New Orleans and Chicago. But most were classified as Level 2, requiring around 8 hours for a full charge.

Selling electric power needs to be handed over to unregulated private companies. Big Utilities do a crap job - they’re the Amtrack and US Post office of service....

“What does “Bob’s your uncle” mean?”

“Piece of cake.”

Although these days it might have to be altered to “Bob’s your aunt” just to be inclusive.

Is 8 years for battery replacement determined? Does it relate to how many miles driven? Is the cost of a used EV reduced by cost of new battery?

$22,000 for new battery? Someone else said $12,000. Is the $22K better than $12K?

Are the old batteries toxic? Where are they stored? How much does it cost to dump them at a collection site?

How does the Toyota EV generate its own energy?

10 year use & pitch? You forget about owners’ kids, who will happily take a 10 year old EV. Can still drive it a few years, before replacing battery.

Replacement batteries are peanuts compared to the upkeep of ICE cars.
Tesla is a sort of extortion racket, there are Chinese cars of similar properties with service intervals of 50,000 miles including just a break job and liquid flush.
The article is misleading in a way that of course a short range city car is a bad choice for a long trip.
For short trips, they are better than regular cars already. Better cars are relatively suitable for long trips. Once they’d have a reliably 1000 mile range on charge, they’d displace ICE.

I guess I should have explained, for those who are a little slow, that the Toyota has a gasoline engine that drives a generator that creates electricity that is used to power electric motors that turn the wheels.

That is not an EV,,,it is a hybrid Although this configuration does not eliminate the use of fossil fuels, it uses them much more efficiently for several reasons.

My DIL was trying to sell her 2012 Honda hybrid in 2016 and we considered buying it. Then I read the battery life was only 5 years and a replacement cost $5000 at the time. We passed.

What if you’re poor and can’t afford a $75,000 car? What if you like to go camping with your travel trailer? What if you need to haul large items around on the weekends, like motorcycles or other toys?

Don’t lecture the rest of us about EV cars because you’re a hot shot lawyer who can afford to spend $75,000 on a car and upgrade the electrical system at your residence.

Think back to when you were still in college and struggling to pay for law school. Many Americans still live like that even after college and grad school. Millions of seniors face that lifestyle in the future, unfortunately.

Maybe try to cultivate some understanding and compassion for those less fortunate than you instead of gloating and bragging about how superior you are.

Why don’t the put induction charging in the roads. It can’t be that difficult. May cause brain cancer with all the EMF but seems like a possibility.

Many of us here who are anti-EV just simply can’t afford to pay $75,000 for a car. We’re not all affluent consumers with money to burn. My husband and I are both college educated and hubby even got an MBA 20 years ago, but our lives still didn’t work out as well financially as we’d hoped. Ppl in our situation don’t deserve to be called luddites or compared to the anti-Trump left. We’re just trying to live out the rest of our lives in peace while retaining as much of our freedom as possible. WTF is wrong with that?

I bought a Subaru Outback (most recently) and will not buy an EV just yet. But I am looking at it as an option down the road.

Right now, the Subaru Outback is treating me just fine. Boxer engine. Good gas mileage. Makes decent turns as it is low to the ground.

From his multiple posts on the subject, he has several homes, buys solar panels by the dozen, can’t wait for boomers to die because we stop progress...and he drinks and drives. Sounds like a great guy. /s
