Brian May keeps falling asleep suddenly months after having Covid: ‘I go out like a light – it’s really weird’

Brian May has revealed a ‘weird’ condition that causes him to keep falling asleep suddenly, months after contracting Covid.

The Queen star fell ill with the virus in December after a birthday lunch with friends, and he has now said he has been dealing with a ‘strange’ condition that causes him to nod off all of a sudden.

The rock icon, 74, told the How Do You Cope?… with Elis and John podcast: ‘I have a strange persisting condition, I think from the Covid, which are kind of brown-outs…

‘Generally, I’m OK, I’m not tired all the time, but I’ll get to a certain point in the day where something inside my head goes, ‘You have to sleep now. You don’t care about any of this, go to sleep – who cares?’

‘It’s an almost irresistible call and I just go out like a light. It’s really weird.’

The guitarist admitted he was concerned about the way the condition could impact his life on tour.

He added: ‘It’s an almost irresistible call and I just go out like a light. It’s really weird.

‘I just hope it doesn’t happen in the middle of a gig, because it’s going to be very embarrassing – “Just hang on for half an hour while I have a nap, guys – then we’ll do We Are The Champions.”

Brian May May battled Covid for more than a week in December (Picture: Brian May/Instagram) ‘But I feel good, I don’t know if it’s changed me.’

May originally told his fans that he caught Covid just before Christmas last year by sharing a picture of his test result on Instagram.

He wrote at the time: ‘Yep. The shocking day finally came for me. The dreaded double red line.

‘And yes – definitely NO sympathy please – it has been a truly horrible few days, but I’m OK. And I will tell the tale.

‘PLEASE take extra care out there, good folks. This thing is incredibly transmissible. You really do NOT want it messing up YOUR Christmas. (sic).’

While it is not known what is particularly afflicting the Queen rocker, some people have reported suffering the effects of Covid for weeks and sometimes months after being infected.

Long Covid can cause some sufferers a range of debilitating symptoms, including fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath and amnesia.

However, experts do not yet know why some people develop Long Covid while others won’t.

During the interview, May also discussed the impact of his father dying the same year as his Queen bandmate Freddie Mercury, in 1991.

He explained that he still to this day, over 30 years on, cannot celebrate the anniversary of Mercury’s death as millions of fans do every year, because it’s too difficult for him.

Asked about how he dealt with both the loss of his dad as well as Mercury, and having to be the public face of the Queen frontman’s death, May said: ‘It was very hard, hard to get perspectives. It was obviously massively important for me to lose my dad and very difficult to come to terms with, but it was a private thing.

‘Losing Freddie was like losing a brother, but yes it had the glare of public knowledge to go along with it, and everybody was reinforcing because Freddie was so visible to everyone and so well-loved by everyone, so we were kind of dragged into a perpetual wheel which still goes on, of kind of having to look at the loss of Freddie in a public way, and that’s not easy.

‘That’s why I tend to hide away on the anniversary of his death – people almost celebrate the day of Freddie’s death – but I don’t want to and I don’t feel I can.’

He added: ‘I’ll celebrate his birthday, I’ll celebrate the day we first got together, but the day of losing him will never be something I can put straight in my head, there was just nothing good about it.

‘There’s no coming to terms because I didn’t want it.’

Mercury died at the age of 45 on November 24 in 1991 of bronchial pneumonia, which resulted from Aids.

Potential antigenic cross-reactivity between SARS-CoV-2 and human tissue with a possible link to an increase in autoimmune diseases

Narcolepsy mentioned as a post vaccination issue.

Brian May has revealed a ‘weird’ condition that causes him to keep falling asleep suddenly

This happened to me during chemotherapy. About three times a day, I would instantly want to fall asleep.

I have a minor version of this. There are times when I just have to go to sleep during the day or I can’t function. It has taken over a year to find out I have two auto antibodies...one is very rare.

Not Covid related.

In trying to figure out what this means it is crystal clear that science just doesn’t understand autoimmune issues.

Johns Hopkins is apparently the place to go for this if you are in that area.

I have been to over 20 specialists. I am hacked off that the signs were there and they couldn’t figure out what blood tests to run to catch the issue...but apparently this is very common.

Thankfully I got to the right Doctor.

Btw..if things just aren’t right with you try to get an ANA test. Use directlabs if you have to. A negative doesn’t rule it out but a positive can get doctors to order more tests . Unfortunately for me...my issue didn’t pop up on the more common tests leaving me in the medical battle from hell.

I still have an altered sense of smell. Had it around Christmas and 2-3 months later this pops up. Certain things smell almost like putrid garbage, seems mostly fuels and products of combustion. The altered smell of the grill and smoker really hurts!

Long haul sickness. I had Covid in January. Took almost 2 months to recover from north to go back to work. Mr. May needs a vitamin regimen and a prescription evaluation. And drink Boost every morning.

Age

Im 67, haven’t had covid, haven’t vaxxed, none of that. I nod off all the time, vivid dreams, 20 minutes, back at it.

That’s been going on for a solid 10 years.

Other worldy, usually when I’m bored or had too much coffee, I limit myself to only 2 strong cups of black per day.

Some time the ground coffee container smells like either canned tuna or cat litter.
