CLAYTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- Every time a car passes through these North Carolina toll collection sites while driving the NC Expressway, a camera takes a picture of your license plate and the state sends you a bill. Mona Raymond's husband got one of these bills.

About a year and a half ago I got a ticket from the New York/New Jersey Port Authority for not paying a toll. The ticket had a low resolution photo of the offending vehicle. The number was the same as mine, but a frame obscured the state for the plate. Our car was nothing at all like the car in the photo, and the plate number matched, but the plate in the photo was not my Michigan plate.
I sent a letter contesting the ticket but never heard back. Who knows, maybe there’s an arrest warrant out for me in New York and/or New Jersey for an unpaid EZ Pass toll.
You might want to check and make sure your license is not suspended. I know some who ignored the ticket in the mail and later found out that their license was suspended.

Thanks, but I’m good. I would have responded to the follow-up letter, but I never got one. Since then I have renewed my license, so all good!

I didn’t know the bypass around Clayton was a toll road. I’ll avoid it by taking the old road through town the next time I’m heading to that part of the coast.

They’ll suspend your license. The letter was your notice. If you get stopped, you’ll be arrested as a felony fugitive from justice.
In Charlotte there is a free part of the bypass and a toll part. You choose which one you will drive on.
Probably not an arrest warrant but fines and late fees could be adding up.
It is very newsworthy. It's widespread fraud committed by private companies at the direction of the state, impacting people's driver's licenses and wallets.
The directors of these companies need to be charged with fraud, fined, and removed from running such programs by court order.

I would take the case to court and call the person making the charge since you have the right to cross examine anyone making a charge against you. If they say it was a computer just reply great, send the computer to testify since it will be under cross examination.
We live in Colorado and kept getting tolls charged to us from a license plate that matched my husband’s car. I knew it wasn’t us b/c it was all out near the airport on the toll road. They were very nice when I called and looked up the photos. It turns out there was a rental car from Nevada with the same plate as ours.
In my case it was nothing more than an honest mistake that I was able to disprove. I have seen no evidence of “widespread fraud”. Spurious accusations do not make it so.
In one location alone in a 25 hour period, there were $84k in overcharges.

aware of the problem and has been working for months [emphasis mine] with the company that installed the gantries to correct the issue." These people, both at the goverment agency and the private company that's fraudulently billing customers, should be hauled into court and charged for mail fraud because that's exactly what it is. They also need to be criminally charged for giving false statements to law enforcement.
They have incident after incident and it's been going on for years.

These agencies treat drivers as guilty until proven innocent. They don't do their research to check vehicle make and model to compare it to a photo. The technology is known to have flaws, and incorrect police plate readers have lead to lawsuits when they pull drivers out of cars at gunpoint:
