The British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF) reports that all new cars sold in the UK from July will be mandated to be fitted with speed-limiting software.
The software, called Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA), is already implemented by some car manufacturers, such as Ford, Mercedes, and Renault, according to the BMF, but will become mandatory for all new cars from July 2022. ISA limits the speed of the car to the prevailing limit on the road the car is currently on; so, if you’re driving in a 30mph zone, it will limit to 30mph. The software can be overridden by the driver, though, the BMF notes.

How are you expected to safely pass on a given road?
And who gets a report of your passing speed?
We all know the UK has no concept of personal liberty,
but that seems unsafe.
Last year I made a trip through several Western states.
and speed limits are a joke.
Keeping up with traffic so I didn’t get run over
going through construction zones in Sacramento and Stockton,
I rarely was less than 70 MPH mostly was at 80 MPH in what were posted as 55 without construction.
Wouldn’t work in America.
My observation is Idaho was the most speed limit observant was Idaho.
but then their speed limit was 80 MPH.
I only go to the left lane to pass.
Communist say: Limit and restrict their travel and movements anyway possible.
There was a reason we fought a war to end British control in this country.
Most in our current panopticon have forgotten why.
Frankly, you need to give up your car keys if you feel unsafe driving within in 10 mph of an 80 mph speed limit on an expressway. There used to be a stretch where the limit was 85, but last time I was through there it looked like they had dropped it to 80. I've also driven on narrow, non-limited access 2 lane roads in the oil field with limits of 70. Watch for trucks pulling out of the side roads.
Eventually all new cars will be battery driverless and government controlled 🤪
Have fun
“Frankly, you need to give up your car keys if you feel unsafe driving within in 10 mph of an 80 mph speed limit on an expressway.”
People like you can go around if you dont like it.
That’s the idea, make it so impractical to drive, people will be forced to use mass transit.
Interstates in Texas? Set 85-90. Otherwise everyone will run over you. You’d be a safety hazard doing under 70.
Black market “improved” limiter chips or systems to reprogram the limiter will be hot sellers.
“How are you expected to safely pass on a given road?”
If I recall the driver’s handbook in Florida, and it’s been a while, you are not allowed to exceed the speed limit when passing. My guess is otherwise people would say, I was passing. But, here’s what a search on the subject found.
“May briefly exceed the speed limit, at a speed and distance only necessary to pass with safety. So, yes, you can speed to pass another vehicle BUT only when you are on a two-lane road, AND the car you are passing is driving below the posted speed limit (i.e., the car you want to pass is going 45 MPH in a 60 MPH zone).”
Oh ya..just like they did a couple years ago during that ice/snow storm.
Most amazing example of stupidity I have ever watched.
How many did you all manage to kill in that demo derby?
Or how about all the demo derbys that are held up around Flagstaff each winter after a dusting of snow?
I told the state cops to run a rolling road blocks to prevent that. They said they are going to discuss that and maybe start doing it.
Run at about 30 to 35 MPH and slow the stupid truckers who havent any idea how to drive on a slick road.
Well, you just have to start decreasing the amount of bureaucrats.
Hawaii is the same way, you are not allowed to exceed the speed limit when passing, ever.
It is the only ticket I ever received in Hawaii in 22 years.
Judge and I had a little back and forth, he reduced my fine to the lowest he could at the time. A week or two later he rebated some of the fine even more.
Most cars speedometer reads about three mph (at 70mph) faster than you are actually going. Check yours with a GPS. Those are super accurate for your speed. Every vehicle I have had for the last 20 yrs and rental I have driven has the speedo telling you that you are faster than you are actually going.
So, the government knows where your car is at all times?
I watch a lot of British crime mysteries, and they must have CCTV virtually everywhere.
Ahhhh, the joys of being a Subject rather than a citizen.
