How Long Can You Eat if Your Power Goes Out?
American Thinker ^ | 27 May, 2022 | Vic Hughes

What if the lights go out this summer? How much food gets lost?

In February 2021, I wrote on the near collapse of the Texas electric grid and asked this rhetorical question: "how would you and your family like to be trapped in your car at 16 degrees below zero?"

Given that it is summertime, and the living is theoretically easy, let me ask another one. If the lights go out, how much refrigerated food will you lose? Similarly, will you be able to replace lost food?

We have all seen huge food price increases and heard media reports of the potential for massive food shortages. Among the many reasons, the Russian-Ukraine war taking out the "breadbasket of Europe" and simultaneously dramatically reducing critical fertilizers products looms large. With no end in sight, this war will significantly impact global food supplies for some time.

Other global factors are also in play. Flooding in China has had a detrimental impact on Chinese crops, and China has limited fertilizer usage in some fields. Also, China is still recovering from a dramatic loss of its swine herds due to swine flu epidemics, creating a potential protein shortage. No idea what the lockdowns will do.

India, one of the larger grain exporters, has placed severe restrictions on its exports to ensure adequate domestic food supplies. Food riots in Sri Lanka are occurring.

Globally, the prices of grains are rising dramatically, creating the potential for almost unimaginable misery among the world's poorest.

Somehow it all seems so orchestrated.

"If the lights go out, how much refrigerated food will you lose?"

The 30-50 pounds of meat we keep in the deep freezer will be defrosted and pressure canned - we lose nothing.

Maybe lose a little mayo in the fridge, that's about it.

Canned food and BBQ grill for backup.

A little wood for cooking.

Need a good ax or chainsaw.

No, not a hockey mask 🤣

I’ve got an 8kv generac that wold run about a week full time on my propane tank. If I run it about two hours a day I can keep the freezers frozen. With careful planning I can probably keep perishable food for a month

I’ve got a portable 4.6 kv backup as well.

The actual answer is need-to-know. At least in our AO.

With 50 pounds of flour and a little lard, I can make biscuits for a long time.

Just speculation, but one of the lost arts is cooking from scratch. If my grandma hadn’t taught me the art of biscuit making as a kid, I’d be lost.

I don’t need power to eat... Makes it easier but not a requirement.

Good ol’ Davos. At least here, maybe it’s sometimes we don’t eat bread, and sometimes we don’t eat meat. In the Third World, it will be more like, time to eat grass.

Instead of asking "How long can you eat if the power goes out?", perhaps the better question is "How do you keep your power from going out?"

Put a solar system onto your house. Don't export power to the grid (which means you won't be required to set up your inverter to automatically shut off power to your house when grid power goes down).

Rocket stove, dutch oven, loads of stored rice and beans, canned meat, dehydrated veggies, bullion cubes, etc., etc.

Live in rural SE VA. Have garden, raise a few cows, chickens, etc. And have hunting rifle.

Ready to go.

Dittos here on the pressure canning. Also I keep a small inverter generator that easily runs my fridge, deep freeze and some lights. Lots of stored stabilized gas in shed.

If you have the room in your deep freeze, fill the bottom of it with plastic gallon milk jugs filled with water. If the power goes out theese will greatly decrease your chances of losing any food. Keep the lid closed and its just like a big ice chest.
